"Dave Okumu, 2010 Mercury Music Prize nominee with The Invisible"

“If there's anyone out there who believes, or has any doubts, that music can display a wanton disregard for boundaries and still remain accessible, engaging, playful and profound, they should lend their ear to this. Saltwater Samurai: it's a massive look.” - personal endorsement

"Gilles Peterson speaking on BBC Radio 1 in 2011"

"Saltwater Samurai’s music is a little bit glitchy, it's a little bit free... They are very much the culmination of what I love about the UK’s jazz and electronic scene”. - BBC Radio 1

"Saltwater Samurai @ The Vortex - live review"

“An exciting post-Polar Bear-esque five piece who layer up slabs of dirty electronic textures with crunchy melodic bites, underpinned by dubbed out bass and drums”. - Time Out (London)

Bio

Saltwater Samurai are a five-piece jazzcore disco-house ensemble hailing from New Cross who take pride in defying convention; blending house beats and dub bass lines, with jazz inflected improvising and glitch. Established through a mutual love of jazz and leftfield electronica they formed in 2010.

They have played alongside exciting bands such as The Invisible, and have also been played on the legendary Gilles Peterson’s BBC Radio 1 show. In 2011 Saltwater Samurai were selected to play the BBC Introducing Stage at the Cheltenham Jazz Festival and their set broadcast on BBC Radio 3’s ‘Jazz on 3’ programme. This led to shows at London’s esteemed Vortex Jazz Club, the Queen Elizabeth Hall and Jazz at Pizza Express, Soho, and more recently their own headline show as part of the 2011 London Jazz Festival.

Saltwater Samurai’s debut self-released E.P. entitled ‘Battered’ has been exciting receptive audiences and attracting critical acclaim from successful musicians such as Sebastian Rochford (Polar Bear) and Dave Okumu (The Invisible). Armed with new tunes and a new EP, ‘Trapped In A Megadrive’ was released in March 2012 and features remixes by, among others, Hello Skinny (Slowfoot). The band launched their latest release and themselves into 2012 with another sold-out show at London’s Vortex Jazz Club.

Having been busy writing and recording new material over the summer, their next single ‘Maximum Thursday’ will be launched at a Saltwater Samurai-curated evening of live music and video at Catch Bar, east-London on October 24th 2012.
