Bio
Once upon a time there lived a lovely songwriter named Abby who could not find her band. Over the course of a couple of years, she joined, started and dissolved many a group. "Will I never find my musical kindred?" she cried one day in frustration. Her girlfriend, Sarah, answered her rhetorical query with, "You know, I've played piano since I was five." And the first incarnation of Salute Your Sweetheart was born.
They quickly started playing their songs at local festivals and coffee shops. At one such gig, they met Mike Slater, who recorded and co-produced their first album, “I'll Be Your Food,” as well as lending his able hand to the bass guitar. His style melded so well with Abby and Sarah's that they asked him to become a full-on Sweetheart.
SYS' songs are truly original: folk mixed with alternative rock mixed with musical theatre. Influences include mostly older fellows from the United Kingdom, like Elvis Costello, XTC, Morrissey and Donovan. Luckily, SYS is American and mostly female, so their sound is fresh as a new day. The lyrics are deeply personal, but strike a universal chord: They understand the importance of storytelling, clever wordplay and musical cohesiveness. They understand you.
