"PHILANTHROPY: Girlstart 10th Anniversary Celebration [Raised over $58,000]"

PHILANTHROPY: ANDREA BALL

Girlstart working to close math, science gap between sexes
Group will hold its 10th anniversary celebration next month

STAFF
Sunday, August 26, 2007

Girlstart, Girlstart, Girlstart. Where were you when I was failing 10th-grade math?
Picture it: 1987, Brewster, N.Y. A young girl in rainbow leg warmers sits in geometry class, scratching her Aqua Net-lacquered head in total confusion.
What in God's name is this "interior alternate angle" of which you speak, she wonders. Basic multiplication is hard enough. Geometry, she knows, will be her undoing.
Somehow, she manages to get through the class with barely a C. Was it a pity pass? She does not care.
Girlstart could have changed all that.
The Austin nonprofit was created in 1997 to help girls excel in math, science and technology. Traditionally, boys outperform girls on standardized math and science tests, even though girls often earn equal or better grades than boys in the classroom.
Case in point: me, earning 80s and 90s in 11th-grade trigonometry and then bombing the state standardized test. Maybe my blue liquid eyeliner blurred my vision.
That traditional math gap often limits girls in their college or career choices. Girlstart aims to change this by offering after-school programs and camps on math, science, engineering and technology.
Girls talk about topics such as rocket science, environmental engineering, computer viruses and statistics.
Statistics. Did I mention how I literally failed college statistics and only passed because of an obscenely generous teacher? That was the last math class I ever took.
But what if there had been a Girlstart for me? Maybe I would have avoided all this math misery. Maybe I'd be some kind of doctor or scientist. Who knows what nasty diseases I might have cured?

Girlstart is holding a 10th anniversary celebration from 6 to 9 p.m. Sept. 6 at the METV Studio, 2130 S. Congress Ave. The event features music from artists including Sara Hickman, SAMANTHA MILLER, Kacy Crowley and Loose Threads.

Heavy hors d'oeuvres and alcohol will be served. Tickets are $75 per person.

The party also includes a raffle for an eight-day vacation for eight in the Caribbean on a luxury yacht staffed with a captain and a cook. Raffle tickets cost $100 each.
For more information, go to www.girlstart.org or call 916-4775.
As for me, I'll keep using online calculators for basic math. And if Girlstart ever opens its doors to 36-year-old math morons, I'll be first in line to take a class.
