"Sam Evans @ The Fleece"

The Fleece’s Acoustic all-dayer earlier this month was meant to be fairly chilled, until 17 year old Sam Evans and his three-piece band took to the stage.

The lads were on second to last in this massive 20 act showcasing event and were no doubt the mustard in this ham sandwich. The opening track of their extended 30 minute set was lively, exciting and pleasantly surprising. Their second track: ‘Tomorrow’s gone’ was much slower, softer and came with sex appeal. ‘Unforgotton’ sounded lounge, jazzy and fierce with some sneaky sexophone from Andy Slade on the box. ‘I wanna be’ consisted of harmonic guitar solos from Jonny Turner throughout.

Then, things got really exciting; The audience went crazy for ‘Gotta Give It A Go’ their funkiest track of the night with Alex Jovcic-sas providing many a ‘sassy’ bass line. Many audience members jumped on tables; dancing, clapping and cheering. The house lights flashed in appreciation and even the band were shocked to the reaction they were receiving.

Sam’s vocal style consists of blended soul, funk and reggae creating something reminiscent of Ed Sheeran but kept interesting with quirky vocal techniques. ‘Good to go’ is a brilliant example of this; an urban vibe you can’t help but jig to. Bringing us to the end of an extremely talented Sam Evans and band’s crowd-pleasing set, the encore that followed was an appropriate conclusion to the night.

The boys have since been in the studio recording ‘Tomorrow Isn’t Promised’ for Birmingham’s Children Hospital. You can now download this track for only 99p from vibedeck.com/Samevans and all funds raised go straight to the charity. - Claire Morrell
