BandPopSinger/Songwriter

Singer/Songwriter, ambient-pop awesomeness wrapped up in a small, feisty package.

Biography

"I'm always pleasantly surprised when a room full of people goes quiet when they hear me sing for the first time," mentions singer/songwriter Sami Akbari. After having seen her perform a few times, one quickly realizes that this is not an uncommon event. It is truly amazing to hear this big, incredible voice come from this little girl, no more than 5 feet tall. When one sees Sami Akbari perform for the first time, they will notice that not only are her songs beautifully heartbreaking with an almost magical essence to them, but she is also incredibly entertaining in between songs in ways that have had people describe her as a mix between a serious musican and Sarah Silverman.

Sami is currently promoting her new 4 song EP, "Somebody Else's Stranger" which has been described as, "moody pop songs that vibe Dido, Tori Amos and Fiona Apple," by the highly regarded Village Voice as well as "a shimmering alt-pop coup. A complex palette of sounds [that create] the perfect backdrop to showcase her smooth, sultry vocals. These well-crafted, lovingly produced songs successfully bridge several genres," by Jessi Robertson of New York City's Local Correspondents and the blog, "Are You Drawing Pretty Things".

Sami has been performing around New York City for the past 2 years at places such as Rockwood Music Hall, Pianos and Crash Mansion amongst others. She has also performed in her home town of Philadelphia where the roots of her musical beginnings are. She is honored to have been asked to perform at the Sam Waxman Cancer Research Foundation fundraising event in July that will give her an audience of about 500 people. She is currently booking more shows in other cities as well as more venues in NYC to continue her promotion of "Somebody Else's Stranger".

Sami recieves many emails from men and women alike asking for relationship advice as well as letting her know how much her songs mean to them. After hearing this "ethereally lovely" (New York Cool Magazine) artist, you will most likely become one of these people. "Somebody Else's Stranger" can currently be purchased on DigStation and CdBaby.com and will soon be available on other digital services such as iTunes and Napster.

Lyrics

Somebody Else's Stranger

Written By: Sami Akbari

I put all my cards out on a
Book shut tight
No one could win with you
I thought I'd play it right
But you just dissapointed me
Or maybe I dissapointed myself
I thought I was a different kind
Turns out I'm like
Everyone else

And now what I deemed to be true
Is suddenly in danger
I've blended back into the crowd
And now,
I'm somebody else's stranger

You're not as complicated
As you pretend to be
There aren't that many puzzle pieces
Left for me to complete
Do I have to make myself bleed,
To prove that I exist?
Or maybe I just don't
Understand how I can be so easy to resist

And now what I deemed to be true is
Suddenly in danger
I've blended back into the crowd and now
I'm somebody else's

I spend my time in the shadows
Waiting for this moment
To follow through
Feeling the sunshine on my back
But I never got to see it
You never gave me a chance to

And now what I deemed to be true
Is suddenly in danger
I've blended back into the crowd and now
And now what I deemed to be true
Is suddenly in danger
I've blended back into the crowd and now
I'm somebody else's stranger (x4)

Telling Myself

Written By: Sami Akbari

So,
Now's the time
You change your mind
And decide that you don't want me
I never thought I'd be the fool
Crawling after someone
Now I'm crawling after you

You closed your eyes before
Just to try to ignore
The open door
In front of you
You took my by surprise
Like a fish of truth
In a sea of lies
But you were the biggest lie of all

I don't deserve this
You don't deserve me
At least that's what I keep telling myself

Even though,
I cry sometimes
I know in the back of my mind
I will be alright
Maybe even tomorrow
I never thought I'd be the fool
Looking for someone
Now I'm looking for someone new

I don't deserve this
You don't deserve me
At least that's what I keep telling myself
I don't deserve this
You don't deserve me
At least that's what I keep telling myself

I don't deserve this
You don't deserve me
I can't be lonely forever
I don't deserve this
You don't deserve me
I can't be lonely forever
At least that's what I keep telling
Myself
Myself
Myself
At least that's what I keep telling
Myself
Myself
At least that's what I keep telling
myself

Quicksand

Written By: Sami Akbari

Have I come this far
Just for it to all fall down?
Watching all of this success
All around my town
As I sink deeper and deeper
Into this quicksand
I feel as though my life
Is slipping through my hands

So someone,
Help me now
Someone,
Help me please
My hopes are too high
And the stars are too far to reach

Maybe I've become resistant
To thinking realistically
But the future's much more optimistic
When you're living for a fantasy
Maybe I should just give up
Maybe I should throw the towel in
If I accept my failure now
I won't be afraid if I never win

So someone,
Help me now
Someone,
Help me please
My hopes are too high
And the stars are too far to reach

Help me now
Someone,
Help me please
My hopes are too high
And the stars are too far to reach
Oh yes, the stars are too far to reach
Yes, the stars are too far to reach

Life Goes By

Written By: Sami Akbari

My heart is mending
Gradually
Though I know there are harder days
In front of me

I am naked
And I'm dancing around
My body's aching
But I won't let it bring me down

I am young but life goes by
Too fast
I am young but life goes by
I am young but life goes by
Too fast
I am young but life goes by

My hope is relentless
It's got a mind of it's own
It seeps right through my skin
Right to my bones

I am smiling
And I'm laughing like a clown
I don't care if someone says I'm
Being too loud

I am young but life goes by
Too fast
I am young but life goes by
I am young but life goes by
Too fast
I am young but life goes by (x4)
