Bio

Whether on guitar or piano, Sam - a 18 year old with a soulful voice - brings to the stage a musical passion that roams the American musical landscape, from the lyrical genius of jazz standards to contemporary pop hits. As opener or headliner, Sam appeals to young and older audiences alike.

MUSICAL BACKGROUND: Denver-born Sam Kuslan began his study of piano at the age of four in Shanghai, where his father then worked. Sam's early instruction was in classical piano, training he continued at New Haven's Neighborhood School of Music upon his family's return to the U.S.

His preference for jazz piano expressed itself several years before he turned sixteen, and his studies in this art form began with Kalim Zarif at the Neighborhood and now studies with jazz great Hal Galper.

INFLUENCES: Oscar Peterson, Hank Jones, Hal Galper, Frank Sinatra, Sammy Davis, Jr., Louis Prima, Keely Smith, Ella Fitzgeral and Fats Waller are among his favorite jazz musicians. Sam is also a serious student of drums, admiring Billy Cobham, Keith Moon and Philly Jo Jones. Sam also plays guitar with aplomb, favoring the artistry of John Mayer, Jamie Cullum, Jimi Hendrix, Stevie Ray Vaughn, Skunk Baxter, Chris Trapper, the Presidents of the United States and many others.

GIGS: With his season-opening recital, Sam kicked off the prestigious Young People's Performance Series in 2008 at New York City's Steinway Hall. He attends Loyola University in New Orleans where he just finished his freshman in college.

Sam has had the opportunity to sit in on piano and/or drums with musical greats such as, Curtis Fuller (Art Blakey and the Jazz Messengers), Lou Donaldson (Thelonious Monk/Milt Jackson), Harold Danko (Chet Baker). He also opened on acoustic guitar for Marc Roberge (Of A Revolution/O.A.R.). He's gigged on piano at the New Britain Museum of Modern Art, the International Festival of Arts and Ideas, Playhouse on the Green and Castle Street Cafe in Great Barrington, Mass.

Sam will also be releasing his first EP, "Music's Calling" in July.
