Bio

Sampras, a 4-piece indie rock band from sunny Ormskirk in the North West of England. A vibrant young quartet consisting of Mike Poynton (guitar/vocals), Mathew Berkley (guitar/vocals), Tom Edwards (drums), and Jamie Jackson (bass).

Formed, as usual, from the straying remnants of a variety of competing bands, Sampras’ members, simultaneously sitting at home alone watching countdown, saw a light at the end of the band break-up tunnel.

‘Maybe sometimes your mates’ bands split up at the same time for good reason’, thought they as they supped a hot brew from and a dirty bowl, no one around to wash a cup for them.

And so, at Westhead Village Hall began a underage musical orgy, the infamous first ever practice. As amps were plugged in and the kettle stirred in the kitchen, a plethora of ideas mounted in the minds of these four talented young chaps. Behind each yellow Fred Perry tee beat the heart of a passionate creative, a little direction from a good friend later and the juices flowed, musically that is.

As the 'f*** it for now' folder began to fill, their brutal writing methods were producing tracks of a noble quality. A knack for honesty Mike Poynton writes lyrics that will no doubt cause friends to squirm. Mathew Berkley, the quiet comedian, began bringing incomparable flair for melodic contribution to the room. Rhythm section Tom Edwards and Jamie Jackson entered into the art of foundation building. A solid base for the creativity to sit upon.

Having only months previous bonded through an off stage exchange of praise, Sampras saw a future in the chemistry they produced. They recently played their second gig to win the Ormskirk Battle of the Bands, knocking out bands such as The Gomars, The Smart Shirt Tuesdays and Death Proof in the process. This title was a testament to the hard work and natural indie prowess these four kids hold.
