Ivy League Scholars

Written By: Sam Rosolina

Ivy League scholars and drunken fools are quick to hand out advice
And both claim that theirs is the only path that diverts from an average life
But this ballroom's filled with looks that kill and stares that will search your soul
The undying glares of those with less care for what you've done than what you know

So what are you to do when faith is all that's left, when love has all run dry
And their hope has been already spent
Can you retrieve
The wins that you've lost
And all the while
Still afford to smile?

Hollywood portrays all scenes in this simple paraphrase
They say "Love holds on long past the borders of your darkest days"
But I propose a different kind of slogan than they do
It says "Why hold tight to something that all others need from you?"

So what are you to do if faith is all that's left, if love has all run dry
And hope has been already spent
Can you retrieve
The wins that you've lost
And all the while
Still afford to smile?

Turn your back toward sunlit streets and your gaze toward the darkened roads/
Brace yourself because what you see is where we're bound to go
Nowadays no one trusts a smile unless it's backed with proof
So remind yourself that fairy tales are rarely based on historical truth

Now faith is all that's left, love has run dry
And hope has been spent
So can you retrieve
The wins that you've lost
The ones that you’ve loved and all that you’ve known
With this final shot?
Will you risk it all for common man
When there’s no ace of spades in this final hand
Can you still hear God through the roaring crowd, does he tell you to bluff or to lay your cards down
While the workers are sorting their boxes and files
And the world’s throwing up on the bathroom tiles
Will you wake them up
And all the while
Still afford to smile?
