Bio

Samuel Claiborne started recording experimental music on a 4-track cassette deck in the late 70s using guitar, voice, toy instruments, ‘moo’ boxes, and ethnic instruments like the South American nose flute. At the same time, as lead guitarist/multi-instrumentalist in several NYC bands - among them The Wolves, The Poorboys, and most well known, Things Fall Apart - he was slamming out hard rock at places like CBGB’s and The Dive.

Around 1985 he started Treebear Studios, located in the infamous Music Building on 8th Avenue between 38th and 39th Streets in New York. There, as Things Fall Apart continued to record and perform, he founded the experimental art music duo Loons in the Monastery with synthesist Jennifer Lowman.

In 1992, Claiborne suffered a severely crushed spinal cord and was, for a short time, a total quadriplegic. With luck, hard work, and non-traditional techniques, he eventually got 95% of the use of his body back. It took seven grueling years before he would play guitar on stage again. It was during these seven years that he turned to the piano and fell in love with an instrument he’d barely played before. You hear the first fruits of that love affair in ‘The Annunciation’.
