Bio

Samuel Del Real was born in Barranquilla Colombia By the age of ten he began studies at the Bellas Artes Music School in Barranquilla. At the age of 16 he began his professional career while performing piano for the legendary Pacho Galan Orchestra, creator of MERECUMBE, tropical rhythm considered today as a classic of the Latin music arena. The next two years would prove to be the conceptual foundation of his musical roots. Samuel caught the attention of the best musicians of his native city. This immediately opened many performing opportunities in radio programs and local shows, as well as, cameo appearances with several local and national bands. At the same time Samuel was working for recording companies as pianist, arranger and producer of diverse recording projects. This experience once again proved Samuel's versatility, brilliance and expressive musical range. In 1978, Samuel decided to expand his horizons even further by studying harmony and counterpoint at the Juan Jose Landaeta Conservatory, along such names as notable guitarist and composer Antonio Lauro. He also studied piano and Form Analysis at the Philarmonic of Caracas Conservatory under the tutelage of international pianist Paul Rosenbloom.
Samuel became arranger for Oscar D' Leon, Andy Monta¤ez and other giants of the Latin America musical scene.
It is actually not surprising that Samuel formed his own band to produce his first album in 1983. It was released under the Venezuelan record label, Velvet who believed in Samuel's extraordinary talent and unique style.
Del Real arrived in Chicago with his band in the mid 80's and produced his third album in 1987. Today his 5 records challenge his interpretation and command of Latin Jazz and AfroCuban traditions.
