Bio

SANAWON (sah-nah-wuhn)
Sanawon (Korean for "fierce"), a keyboard and drums duo, has recently released its second record, "Bonfire Night" (2008), a collection of songs chronicling Choi's recent experiences addressing violence against women. "Bonfire Night" is an annual celebration in the UK where effigies of the Gunpowder Plot conspirators (including Guy Fawkes) are burned. It has become a holiday celebrating the survival of hardships and shedding the baggage of victimization. For fans of Denali, Death Cab for Cutie and Blonde Redhead.

After coordinating the national Asians In Rock tour across indie venue and university circuits and touring through Korea over the span of two years, Choi worked as a policy advocate for an Asian immigrant domestic and sexual violence agency in Chicago. Her experiences there eventually led her to co-found a legal advocacy center for low-income survivors of sexual assault and exploitation, The Justice Project Against Sexual Harm (justicepash.org). Her work with survivors inspired this recent collection of songs, mostly tied to themes of despair, bravery and hope.

Sanawon has supported names such as Versus, Seam, Travis Morrison, and Ida.

Sanawon is also pleased to announce the recent addition of David Johnson (related: Favorite Saints, Very Secretary, The One Up Downstairs), who engineered the record, with the exception of one track engineered and mixed by Chad Clark (related: Dismemberment Plan, Fugazi) and TJ Lipple (related: Aloha) of Inner Ear/Silver Sonya studios in Arlington, VA.
