SANDRA CROSS

BandR&BReggae

Sandra has been described as the Alisha Keyes of Reggae. She writes and composes her own songs. And as well as a dynamic 'stand up' performance on stage she also accompanies her band instrumentally by performing her songs on the piano.

Biography

This 7-times British Reggae Awards-winning diva has a lot to offer to not only the reggae music industry but the whole music industry on the whole. Her unique charisma and charm brings out and compliments her diversity and musical talent, which she has religously shared with her fans over the years.

Sandra was born the only girl amongst seven boys in South London, England. Her father taught her to play the piano at the tender age of 5 years.
Because her parents were strict church goers, it was in the local Pentecostal church that her talent for singing and playing the piano was discovered. So by the time she had reached 10yrs old she was appointed lead singer of the church choir.

At the age of 14yrs, she entered a local talent contest performing a song she had written and composed by herself entitled ‘I Adore You’.
Triumphantly, she won the contest and was awarded the prize of a recording contract with a local record company.
‘I Adore You’ was recorded and released, and just a few weeks after went to the number one spot in the British Reggae charts. It stayed there for four weeks!
Following the hit, three more songs were released. ‘I Just Don’t Care’ and ‘ I Can’t Let You Go’ of which both again, were written and composed by Sandra. All three songs sat comfortably in the top 10 positions in the Radio London and various other reggae charts all over Britain.

Sadly, after realizing the producer was ‘taking more than his share’, financially, at the age of 16 yrs, Sandra signed her career to another promising record company who released another self-penned song by Sandra called ‘Glue On the Paper’.
Due to poor marketing and lack of experience from the record company, the record did not do as well as expected. By this time Sandra was a little despondent with the music industry and decided to take a break.

Three years later in 1983, her brother introduced her to an up and coming record label in South London called Ariwa Records. It was there she formed a girl-band called ‘The Wild Bunch’. Ariwa Records released their first album entitled ‘The Wild Bunch’ which went to the No. 6 spot in the reggae album charts. Following this success, The Wild Bunch toured England and Europe perfoming at sell-out shows.

In 1995 Sandra decided it was time to go solo again, and Ariwa Records released her 1st single on the label, a rendition of The Stylistics ‘Country Living”.
Two weeks after it’s release, Country Living went straight the number one spot, this time not only in the British reggae charts, America and Japan!
It stayed at the no. 1 spot for an amazing 10 weeks!

Her follow up single ‘You’re Lying’, a song penned by her and her brother was released shortly after, and this too went to the no.1 position for 4 weeks! A third single, ‘It’s You’, again penned by Sandra, followed the trend it too went to the no. 1 spot for 2 weeks.

Following this amazing success, Sandra was voted best reggae female singer by fans and listeners of the British, American and Japanese public in 1985, 1986, 1987, 1988 and 1990 consecutively.
Between 1989 and 1994, Sandra toured Japan and the United States. Her albums and singles topped the international reggae charts making her one of the most recognized and appreciated reggae female artist in the world.

1998 Sandra teamed up with producer Alan Weeks, guitarist of the stongest Ska/Reggae band – Jazz Jamaica. They both singed recording deals with Pioneer Records of Japan. She recorded two albums entitled ‘Just A Dream’ and Dreams Come True’. This introduced a new style of music in to the music industry, which was a fusion of jazz and reggae. The albums were big sellers in Japan exclusively.
Since then she has recorded over 10 albums and is featured on over 20 compilations albums worldwide.

Lyrics

BE PROUD

Written By: SANDRA CROSS

VERSE1
Don't give up, you've gotta keep going,
The world is out there for you,
You've got to try, you've got to keep pushing,
You'll see good things out there for you

Don't you past it, don't you waste it, let them hear your voice

CHOURS
Be proud, proud of the person you are, be happy
In this world of pain and strife, don't you waste your life, be happy
Dont put your trust in vanity,
Be proud of your life

VERSE2
Don't be fooled by all the boasting,
That some will bring to you,
Behind it all there is nothing that compares to being you,

Learn to see it when it's coming,
and reach out with all your might
Be determined, keep believing, don't throw it all away

CHORUS
Be proud...........

CONTROL

Written By: SANDRA CROSS

VERSE 1
Trying to understand why seemingly,
Instead of your friend life is your enemy,
Why the things you do don't turn out right,
All the goals you aim for seem way out of sight?

(You must) Take full control, don't let it hold your mind
Got to push it all behind
Take full control don't let it pass you by
Learn to hold your head up high.

VERSE 2
Don't give up and let it get you down,
searc your soul when nobody else is around
When those feelings that come from the heart
turn so bad that's when the pain really starts,

CHORUS
(You must take full control)

You gotta take control
You gotta take control

Don't let it hold your mind.
No,
