"Sage the Firedancer"

WATCHING HER PERFORMANCE IS MESMORIZING TO SAY THE LEAST. YOU CANNOT GO WRONG WITH ONE OF HER FIREDANCING PERFORMANCES. I HAVE ATTENDED CLOSE TO TWENTY OF THEM AND THE NEXT TIME THEY PUT ON A SHOW, YOU CAN BET MY ASS WILL BE THERE. WE TALKED JUST AFTER A SANGRE DEL SOL SHOW. THIS SHOW INVOLVES MANY FIREDANCERS AND OTHER PERFORMERS. IT IS A GREAT NIGHT OUT. FOR ME, SAGE STEALS THE SHOW. THANKS FOR SHARING YOUR TIME WITH THE DAZE SAGE. OH YEAH, I USED SPELLLCHECK JUST FOR YOU:)!

AD: Are you from Austin?

S: No, I was born in Greenwich Village. New York, raised in Los Angeles and moved to Austin about 10 or 11 years ago. But I am from some far off distant planet that I can’t pronounce with our limited tongue movement made of all green swirly rubber balls, butterfly wings and pink ding dongs.

AD: When and how did you get interested in performing with fire?

S: The first time I saw that sexy cheerleader from Grease spin fire batons I said, “that’s what I’m gonna do when I grow up” So about 9 1/2 years ago in Austin I saw this women named Aurora light up her fire poi (chains) and started spinning them around. I was completely mesmerized. It was then I remember my childhood dream to be a fire cheerleader. It was the most powerful thing I had ever seen a women do. (I knew I could finally get a date if I learned how to do this) So she showed me a few tricks and then I was totally hooked. I started practicing all the time. It is a lot of fun and a really great form of moving meditation. Then people around town started getting really interested in it and asking me to do it at their parties. But little did I know I was just going to scare all my dates away. They all thought I was some sort of a witch. Ha Ha Ha!

AD: Do your dreams/ fantasies play a role in the choreography of your performances?

S: Maybe not so much in choreography, but definitely in characters, props, costumes, music and story lines. Some of our Halloween shows have been based almost all on dreams and fantasies we’ve had.

AD: Your performances mesh sexy routines with danger. Are you working with the notion of forbidden elements to make a statement?

S: I’ve never really given that too much thought. At least not on a conscious level. Nor have I really considered fire or sexiness forbidden elements.
I have always felt them to be sacred and playful. As far as making a statement; we are just expressing ourselves and creating ourselves. Doing what we were sent here to do. Coming from the heart and promoting inspiration, strength, creativity, passion, and getting back to the core of one’s self. We just like to dance with the fire spirits and if sexiness comes out of that, so be it.

AD: Tell me your definition of a fetish?

S: Something out of the ordinary that turns you on

AD: Have you been burned?

S: Yes, many, many times. Mostly just minor, but I’ve had one major burn on my face. Fortunately for me the face heals very quickly and I had lots of healers come to my aid. Burns happen often to people who play with the fire. After a while it really doesn’t effect you as much. Sometimes I get burned and won’t really notice it for a couple of days. When I was a child I got burned pretty regularly too. Maybe it has something to do with my Moon being in Aries. I definitely don’t like getting burned so I practice and wear the proper protective clothing.

AD: Tell us about Sangre del Sol.

S: It is Spanish for Blood of the Sun. We chose this name because it fits what we do. Fire is the blood of the Sun and we are a part of the Sun. I feel if there is anything that I worship it is and always has been the Sun. The original members of Sangre del Sol, formed about 8 years ago, were Aurora, Zarah and I. We have all traveled through Mexico many times and feel a strong connection with the Spanish culture and language. Now the main members are Zarah, Kat, Arashi, Tashar and I. We switch musicians, dj’s and guests fire performers, so that we can always give others opportunities to share their talents and give our audience some variety.

AD: What is most special to you about Austin?

S: The bats and the water. Bat medicine is considered to be very shamanic and transforming. They see in the dark, which is very symbolic of being able to see into our subconscious. Bringing what is hidden into the light. Taking a look at our darker side, digging down way deep and bringing transformation for healing to take place. Plus they eat mostly mosquito’s which caring the blood (DNA) of many species. So the bats must know a thing or two about a thing or two. I been told that austin is built over an aquifer. Water is just as powerful as fire. It is super conductive (attracts lots of energy). I feel this really has and affect on everything that lives here. Water is feminine, healing, cleansing, nurturing, represents subconscious dreamtime, abundance and ever flowing life. This contributes to all of the art, music and lovely
high energy conscious people.

Bio

Sangré del Sol is a unique troupe of fire and UV/glow dancers that formed in Austin, Texas and have been performing together and inspiring others worldwide for over 10 years. The group's performances include stunning and extraordinary costume design and original fire props, with the option of integrating live music and graphic art installation. Their training includes hip-hop, West African, Indian, Middle Eastern, and Latin dance styles, as well as martial arts and theatre; all are represented in their complex and refined choreography.

Available acts include fire-eating, breathing, body-burning, poi, staff, double batons, fans, crowns, horns, masks, bowl-balancing, hand torches, fire fingers, sticks, swords, hula-hoops, 10-ft. diameter fire ring, jack-in-the-box, bull whips, flaming sculptures, jump ropes, fire wings, brassieres, stilt walkers, glow props and LED lights (for non-fire events), fire puppets, veils, fabric wings and flags.

The troupe is built upon a foundation of safety – for both the crew as well as the audience. They have held permits and have been supported by their local fire marshal for the last eight years. By fusing primitive and organic aesthetics with modern technology, they captivate the senses and create mysticism while celebrating spirituality and raising awareness.
