Bio

Sanjay Divecha is a composer and guitarist currently based out of Mumbai, India.
Only recently, he was featured on the background score of the award winning Danny Boyle flick, 127 Hours, which paired him with A.R Rahman. The movie went on to receive multiple accolades including the ‘Best Original Score’.
Sanjay’s quest for complete musical expression has been a cross border search; both physical and cultural, and his experience has involved playing music with artists such as Angelique Kidjo, Carlos Santana, Michael McDonald, Fred Raulston, Dave Weckl, Louis Johnson, Dumazz and Sambaguru among others.
Sanjay graduated in 1989 from the Guitar Institute of Technology (Musician’s Institute; M.I) in Los Angeles where he studied with renowned guitarists such as Scott Henderson, Joe DiOrio and Robben Ford.
During his time in L.A, Sanjay worked as a session musician, recording and performing music that showcased his Jazz, African, Brazilian, R&B and Gospel interests over a period of 15 years. The opportunities afforded to him were indispensible; he is fluent in a myriad of styles and the L.A experience has been invaluable for his work in jingles, scores and arrangements.
Some of the big stages he has played include the Playboy Jazz Festival, Hollywood Bowl and the New Orleans Jazz Festival.
Sanjay also has worked on several movie soundtracks including Woman on Top with Argentinean composer Luis Bacalov. He also scored Leela which won a Special Jury Award at Toronto Reel World Film Festival.
In 2003, a chance visit home led Sanjay to continue exploring music in India. He was able to incorporate his cultural roots into an already distinctive and universal sound. Four years later, he released Full Circle; an autobiographical portrait of a composer and guitarist who has returned to his Indian roots without forsaking the invaluable musical experience afforded to him by the West. The album featured prominent singers in the industry including Kailash Kher.
Bollywood has been no stranger either; Sanjay has worked with the best in the business and his arrangements, orchestration and guitar playing can be heard on many a tune in the domain.
Sanjay’s current musical output involves the use of indo-centric folk traditions and classical music—both Hindustani and Carnatic interspersed with his comprehensive experience spanning the music of Brazil, Africa and the Americas—all with acoustic sensibilities. To this effect, he is currently at work with his band performing music that traverses borders and genres all the while resonating close to the heartland.
