"Santerias"

Santerias World Music - Bosketches Only in a multicultural centre like Toronto could a group like "Santerias World Music" come alive and thrive. With the release of their first CD Bosketches, Santerias is introducing us to their unique blend of Latin American, flamenco, middle eastern and jazz-influenced sound. Although the membership of the group has changed since recording the CD, the mainstays of the group are Juan Dino Toledo from Chile, who plays guitar and writes the lion's share of the music; Jorge Araiza, bass player from Mexico, and Jason Guerriere a Canadian who also does duty on percussion and drums. All 11 tunes on Bosketches are original and the band went with minimalist production and very little overdubbing to keep the recording as close as possible to their live sound. Although the majority of the lyrics are in Spanish, language is not an issue, because the group's energy and inventiveness cuts across all barriers. Cathy Riches

Santerias has been nominated for the Toronto-Latin Award, held at Roy Thomson Hall, for best Album Of the Year. Santerias' Bosketches, their eleven track first CD includes songs with a natural fusion of world rhythms, together with the warm melodies of the flamenco guitar played by Juan Dino Toledo. - Downtown Toronto Jazz Magazine

Bio

COME INTO OUR WORLD -- where flamenco meets Brazilian passion, with a middle eastern twist -- it's musical voodoo... WHAT ARE WE ABOUT? Four musicians and two dancers bring you their take on the world -- It's a fusion of musical styles, based in Latin American rhythms, Flamenco, Middle Eastern and even tasty bits of Brazilian jazz, with an emphasis on the warm sounds and rich melodies of the acoustic guitars, bass, and percussions. To that we add an exotic mix of vocals in several languages, along with fiery live performances that include an urban flamenco dance edge. HAVE YOU SEEN US? We've been showing off our stuff to full audiences at several clubs and festivals throughout Toronto, and in 2004 released our first CD entitled "Bosketches" to wide acclaim. We've also recorded two videos with TMN (The Movie Network) and Bravo, and have received media praise for our work from several broadcasters, including CBC and Telelatino.
