"Hamilton Music Awards Rising Stars"

Last night, eleven young contenders for Hamilton's Rising Star Award took to the stage of the McIntyre Theater at Mohawk College. Most were secondary school students, with the youngest being Brandon Pacheco, 13, who is also nominated in two other categories. Brandon, who's had thousands of YouTube views, was backed by a foursome of young dancers on his second song.
But he had his work cut out for him as the judges weighed up his performance and originality against those of 17-year-old Grade 12 student and talented singer/songwriter, Sarah Botelho, who won second place with her engaging delivery of a cover song and her well-crafted original, "Mars".

Bio

Everyone had that project in elementary school where you have to say what you want to be when you grow up. I was that hopeful little kid who, every single time, did that project about being singer. And that basically stayed with me since then. Going into my second year of university at Western, I'm at a point in my life where I really want to start pursuing music professionally.
The main thing that sets me apart from every other application you're going to get is my voice. A lot of people think you need more than a great voice to make it so they start dressing up their acts with dancers and lights and smoke, but that just takes away from it. I've never tried to sound like anyone else in particular, and when you're developing your voice, that's a very tricky thing to do. I wanted to be unique; just me and my piano up on stage, mesmorizing thousands. That being said, I would be nothing without some guidance from my musical idols: Florence & The Machine, Radiohead, Metric, Katy Perry, Laura Marling and a few more. There's something I've learned from all of them; when to hold a note accapella to hear the silence of the crowd, when to belt out, when to sing softly, and how to make lyrics that leave people thinking.
