“Que Sarah”

“With so many singer/songwriters in the world today, it’s refreshing to hear someone who is articulate and thought-provoking. Sarah uses a musical canvas that is both original and familiar, while her laid back attention to detail makes her an ideal gust in the live music atmosphere.”
Paul Hinrichs, host of Live and Let Live, Kootenay Co-op Radio, Nelson, B.C.

"Paper Review"

“Sarah Calvert is a poet and musician. It is impossible to listen to her without drifting into a meditative state. And when she has finished her song, you may just find that you understand a little more about life and you feel good about it”
Nelson Becker, The Express Newspaper, Nelson, B.C.

Bio

A rare vintage blend of Norah Jones and Debbie Harry, this full-bodied singer-songwriter mingles roots and jazz, for a heady blues infusion.

Sarah Calvert is a modern day Renaissance Woman who adorns many hats as an award-winning performing singer-songwriter, producer, assistant musical theatre director (for the recent Mirvish smash, My Mothers Lesbian Jewish Wiccan Wedding), former high school English teacher, freelance journalist, Extreme Freestyle Skiing competitor, ski, sailing and Kundalini Yoga instructor, mantra musician and all around swell gal.

A multi-instrumentalist, she accompanies her earthy bluesy vocal stylings with piano, guitar and harmonica. She uses her love of language with insightful clever lyrics invoking humour and humility. After teaching high-school English for a decade, her students got sick of her playing music for most lessons and enouraged her to leave teaching with many days of verbal abuse and in class fist fights. For this, she thanks them as being the catalyst for change: she quit teaching and went back to study jazz piano and vocals at Selkirk College, the Canadian satellite school for Berklee College. She traded pensions and benefits for passion and an unmarked road and hasn't looked back since. An avid learner of life, she continued studying guitar with Juno-nominated Suzie Vinnick, and piano with Frank Falco of York University, and world-renowned blues piano man, Lance Anderson.

Her diverse style is reflected in her influences; both parents encouraged her to enjoy listening to and playing music of all kinds, My dad always had an amazing record collection; he was at Woodstock and music was his passion. I remember listening to The Stones and the Beatles as a toddler, and dancing around the living room belting out everything from The Band to Barbara Streisand. My mum always took me to Broadway shows in Toronto. She would have me do concerts for her friends and play Patsy Cline, the Andrew Sisters, and then Beethoven. My Uncle Terry got me involved with his weekly bluegrass jams in Barrie, Ontario where I grew up. He was always lending me amazing instruments. I owe so much to my family for cultivating my love of music.

She plays various venues internationally from pubs in the U.K., cafes in Australia, amphitheatres in India, to aprs ski gigs in B.C. Sarah is touring her albums "Other Side" and "Love and Light" across Canada and beyond, with international radio play and glowing reviews. Currently she's working on a musical memoir about her world travels and experiences in life, love and music.
