Biography

The Music of Sarah Cheevers:

Sarah has spent her entire life on Canada’s west coast, and it is this experience that has most influenced her songs. Evoking images of life on the shores of the Pacific Ocean, Sarah’s lyrics are often a painstakingly honest perspective on nature itself, or on personal relationships that strive to succeed in a time when our very environment is stressed. Most songs emanate from her own experiences, of course, whether they be from the ecstasy and pain of love, or from her work as a school teacher with under-privileged youth. It is clear that the passion in Sarah’s songs come from a profound love for people and the natural world in which we must forge our relationships.

Over the years, people who have encountered Sarah’s music, whether it be from listening to her two independent CDs to those who have seen her at various venues, from Vancouver’s Railway Club to Canadian Music Week in Toronto, have had a very intimate and authentic experience. Sarah's lyrics have caught the attention of CBC's Paul Grant, as well as west coast acoustic blues legend Kelly Joe Phelps, whom Sarah has also recorded with. For the past five years, Sarah has played regularly at the Cottage Bistro in Vancouver.

Most of her songs oscillate between a rhythmic strumming to finger-picking lines based on her own very unique and beautiful melodies. Sarah’s guitar-playing style provides a perfect backdrop for her lyrics, the emotion inherent in both making for perfect and harmonious musical moments. Listening to the music of Sarah Cheevers is like immersing oneself in all that is worth contemplating about west coast life. Come and try it out.

Lyrics

Steal Away

Written By: Sarah Cheevers/ Doug Milledge

There is a longing in your eyes
There is a belonging in my sleep
There is a craving in my gut
About a moment we could take

To the mountains we would escape
In the early morning we would wake
Free to hold
Free to caress
Take me away
That’s what you do best
Down the path
We come to lay
You are my reason
I have to steal away

You’ve got torture in your soul
You’ve got torment in your face
You’re screwed up in the head
About the things you’ve got at stake

To paradise we will escape
And under moon we will tempt fate

Hey, hey steal away
Can’t wait another day
Now, now love you now
Gonna leave no matter how

Run

Written By: Sarah Cheevers

Saw you at the bar last night
I know why
You came back again
Funny how things never change
Were you hoping to see your little one?

Cops came around this morning
Asking if I’d seen you, I said nothing
Hoping you had left town
Then I started crying:

Run, run, run, run, run
Run away
Never come back
Run, run, run, run, run
Run away

I see you in my dreams
I know your desperation
I know we’ve lost our way
Will we survive with patience?

Saw your Ben on the bus last night
Found him running away again
Funny how things never change
He was looking for you

You were eight years old
Like Ben is now
The last time you saw your dad
You heard him cry:

Run, run, run, run, run
Run away
Never come back
Run, run, run, run, run, run away

He sees you in his dreams
You’re the father of his desperation
God knows you’ve lost your way
God save him
