"Final Cut on Monday"

Local singer-songwriter Sarah Felker, 15, is one of 12 finalists in the national Randy River Final Cut contest. The GCVI student has been playing guitar since she was a youngster and has been writing her own songs for about two years. “I try to write about things typical teenagers go through, so they can relate to my songs,” she said. Sarah, who plays under the name Sarah J, won first place in a battle of the bands competition at local club Vinyl which scored her recording time at a studio, she said. Then she qualified for this contest at a competition in Kitchener. People can listen to her songs and vote for her at www.supernova.com/sarahj601 until 11:59 p. m. on Monday Feb. 23. The winning musician will have a song featured in a Much Music commercial, she said. Sarah is also performing downtown at Molly Bloom’s Irish Pub tonight (Feb. 20) from 9:30 to 10 p. m. “I’m just trying to play as many shows as I can to get myself out there,” said Sarah, who hopes to make music her career. - Guelph Tribune, February 20, 2009

Bio

Sarah J Felker a singer/songwriter born and raised in the small Southwestern Ontario City of Guelph. Sarah demonstrated great musicality and a true love of music very early on, gathering costumes and the neighborhood kids to rehearse on an old unused cement garbage platform, fondly remembered by Sarah as her first band. At the age of ten she picked up the guitar. Not surprisingly, Sarah showed a natural instinct and passion, and the journey to make her dream a reality began.

At the age of 13, Sarah J began performing anywhere and everywhere she could, at venues in the Guelph, Kitchener/Waterloo and Cambridge areas, tirelessly searching to find new contacts and places to play, and eager to learn all she could about the business. In 2009 after performing one evening, Sarah was invited to attend the Songstudio Songwriter’s Workshop in Toronto, where she is proud and honoured to have played great venues such as: C’est What and Hugh’s Room, as well as being backed on stage by the amazing Rik Emmett. Returning for the 2010 workshop, Sarah was pleasantly surprised to be presented with the “Damn Good” award for excellence in songwriting.

Sarah continues writing and performing with the goal of releasing her first CD early in 2012. Her pop style and desire to learn, along with a great understanding of the dedication and drive required to reach her goals is sure to set the train in motion and keep it rolling “full steam ahead”.

Sarah J’s unconditional love of the stage shows in her performance giving her listeners an awesome experience each time she hits the stage.
