Sarah Johnston (Sarahjane) is an 18-year-old artist with fresh ideas yet familiar roots, easily alternating synthy heartfelt folk ballads with gutsy blues-tinged pop. Inspired by artists as varied as the White Stripes, Leonard Cohen, and Rufus Wainwright, Sarah's music is poetic yet universal.

Biography

Sarah Johnston (Sarahjane)'s music has been called "soulful", "haunting, incandescent" and "truly beautiful" by her fellow performers. Having opened for and shared the stage with acts such as Suzie Vinnick, Penny Lang, Chris Whiteley & Diana Braithwaite, the Marigolds, Arthur Renwick and Keith Thompson, her confidence and delivery improve with each performance.

Sarah's unique songwriting has also won her awards and recognition: in 2007, she made it through the first round of judging in the International Songwriting Contest with all 3 entered songs. Also, in 2006, her song "Diamonds In Your Eyes" was chosen by Canada's Responsible Gambling Council to be featured in "House of Cards", a play warning students of the dangers of gambling. The play toured nationally, and Sarah was awarded a scholarship for her song.

Sarah's performances also carry an international flair; having studied over 5 languages, she writes and covers songs in French and Spanish, and is not yet ruling out the incorporation of German, Italian and Chinese songs into her sets. She has performed in local musicals, fundraising shows, open stages and house concerts, and is eager to find more opportunities to share her music.

Ain't Nobody

Written By: Sarah Johnston

Well you gave me a road, and I'll follow along
I have nothing to do, these years are too long
I don't know where it goes, I don't know where you've gone
So there ain't nobody here to tell me I'm wrong

Well let's rock and roll, get that feeling so fleeting
but I know you won't love me when I look this needy
With cherry-cola goldilocks and a round-faced grin,
oh you've got better things to do than to let me in, but
you gave me a road, and I'll follow along
There ain't nobody here to tell me I'm wrong...

Well I thought I'd leave you alone, perhaps give a little space, but then I watched as somebody else took my place
She's got a ballerina's body and the face of a doll,
and I try to build a little trust but you just build a wall... ohhh

Well you gave me a road, and I'll follow along
There ain't nobody here to tell me I'm wrong
Well I'll follow along, I'll whistle a tune
There may not be an end, or maybe I'll get there soon
Well you gave me a road, and I'll follow along
There ain't nobody here to tell me I'm wrong

Kiss You In The Rain

Written By: Sarah Johnston

I live my life like a movie
every minute a work of art
written like a paperback story
everyone cast in their part
I'm always sighing and waiting
for the actor to help me end this play
for the true love to let me live again
put me in his car and drive away
for the one to say:
"hold still as I kiss you in the rain".

well you live your live like you're endless,
like you've got all this time to sit and wait
you can't foresee the falling curtains
there's no end for you to anticipate
well darling I'm sighing and waiting
knowing you're the one to pull me out
but without your hand I float lifelessly
when you're not here I'm just without
with no one to say:
"hold still as I kiss you in the rain".

well I want my life like a movie
I need the romance and suspense
and I want you to come with me
I need to pull you down from that fence
and maybe I'll be the one to say
"hold still" as I kiss you in the rain.
Hold still...

Dare To Look Back

Written By: Sarah Johnston

I've taken the hint, I'll leave you alone
it'll be hard to walk away from this beauty I've been shown
just dare to look back, dare to see me that way
dare to think you've let something good slip away
dare to remember the back of my head
when you wish it were lying there next to yours instead

they said come on, take that chance, that chance might take you somewhere
it could make you feel younger, lift sidewalks into the air
but love is a gamble, that's all we can trust
I dared to hope the exception was us.
I thought I knew for certain, now what do I know?
you said you were falling in love, now you're asking me to go

I dreamed we'd be together, I know I'm going to sound crazy
but I saw us living on a farm on some kind of prairie
but I know she owns every part of you, and I'm not asking you to stray
just let your eyes follow my feet as they walk away...

look back...

Patience

Written By: Sarah Johnston

peut-être on haît tout ce qu'on aime;
la vie éfface le désir.
mais peut-être nos coeurs sont les mêmes
et nous devons les découvrir.
parfois je veux m'en échapper;
si je dois t'attendre, je veux t'oublier
mais après je pleurerais chaque jour
disant que se m'est échappé encore l'amour

mais l'amour est patient, pas comme moi
oui l'amour est patient, pas comme moi
l'amour ne bouge aucun pied;
il sait bien quand il doit y rester,
ou quand le feu est devenu froid, pas comme moi...

l'amour ne doit dire rien
pourqu'un coeur en soit plein
il nous attrape quand on le voit, pas comme moi.

The Only Girl On Earth

Written By: Sarah Johnston

I'm wasting away the afternoon
on a broken couch in my living room
will my life be over soon
or am I still kicking in the womb?

Some days I live like a child,
some days I wish I were a grandmother
some days drag on like years, some years fly by like days
I'm feeling like a token in the game the universe is playing

I'm watching the calendar, turning the pages
but still no different through the ages
still dolls and potions, bears and mages
masks and capes on empty stages

Some days I wish I were the only girl on Earth
some days I wish I were somebody's lover
to have, to hold, Lord knows I've never been that bold
and who wants a girl who's too afraid to leave her home?

grow up, slow down, feet in air, head on ground
want more, get less, high heels, fancy dress
but every stain on the shirt that I wear
is just another imperfection that I'll have to share
and every lie that comes out of my mouth
is my own clever way to try and figure you out

some days I feel that there is nothing I can do
some days I wish I knew my father
but I've got my head, I've got my heart, I've got my sight
all I need's a voice to whisper that I'm going to be alright
I'm gonna be alright
I'm gonna be alright

Leave Me Slowly

Written By: Sarah Johnston

Pack up quick and then just leave me slowly
I don't care about the money, I don't care about your dark side
pick up your feet and then pause in the doorway
just so I can watch you hesitate,
just so I can see your face as it falls

then I'll sit back down, maybe water the flowers
just keep one thing alive for a few more hours
for a second I was sweet, for a minute I was clever
you've got a passion for today but you can't care about forever

Pack up quick and then just leave me slowly
I don't care about the money, I don't care about your dark side
pick up your feet and then pause in the doorway
just so I can watch you hesitate,
just so I can see your face as it falls

then you'll meet your friends, tell them what you're missing
say you've been dismissing the girl that you've been kissing
but maybe just for a moment you'll look back and remember

remember...

that you could feel the room and every shape that it contained
every face in every picture and the crooked way we framed them
and my heart upon the floor as it lay breaking from the strain
and the happiness we could have made if only you'd remained

ain't it funny how these things they just stick with you
when you take the time to look around, your eyes decide to write them down
