"MCO Chapel Features Gospel Choir"

MCO Chapel Features Gospel Choir
Oct 13, 2006
The Cornerstone University Multicultural Organization held its first chapel of the semester on Tuesday, October 10, and it featured the first performance by the newly formed CU gospel choir. Their energetic performance was well received by students and personnel alike.

Darice Darby, a freshman psychology major, was the mind behind the formation of the group. She recalls that when looking for a college to attend, it was important to her that there be a gospel choir. “Although CU did not have a gospel choir,” says Darby, “I felt that this was the place that God wanted me to be, so I came.”

But shortly into her time here at CU, her admission’s counselor learned of her desire to sing in a gospel choir. He put her in contact with Kay Landrum, the staff sponsor for the multicultural organization (MCO). “Kay was very excited,” says Darby. “She told me how she had wanted to have a gospel choir for a while and that she would be happy to help me get it going.”

With Landrum’s encouragement, Darby began recruiting. Landrum then introduced Darby to Sarah Lamb, a junior contemporary Christian music major, who led worship for MCO chapels last year. “I was so excited to hear that someone was taking the initiative to start a gospel choir,” says Lamb. “I have always wanted to be a part of one.” Little did she know, she would help lead it.

Lamb is in charge of helping to choose music and running rehearsals, although the group is still very much a team effort. “I mainly continue to ask the choir what I need to go over with them so that we will all be prepared and adequately rehearsed,” says Lamb. “In this way, we won’t be a distraction, but a choir offering up worship to God.”

The group plans to perform at each MCO chapel throughout the school year.

Bio

I have been singing since I can remember, but more specifically I've been leading worship for 11 years with groups ranging in size from simply me on vocals and piano to joining a team of 13 with two electric guitars, 2 keyboards, 2 acoustics, a bass, drums, and six vocalists.
I'm involved in tons of ensembles including Cornerstone University's auditioned choir Chorale and the select 8 voice ensemble.

Event's I've played for include:
Greece Benefit Concert- Performed originals (vocal/piano)

Battle Creek Youth retreat, Greece Benefit Concert-
Performed with Northfield band

At Weddings: Bridal March, Cannon in D, Only Hope, and a worship set

I love having the opportunities to lead others in worshiping Christ through songs, and while I was on a mission trip in Mexico I was given the chance to help lead some of the music during church services- in SPANISH! At that point I barely knew any Spanish, but it allowed me to realize a deep passion I have to learn and use both Spanish and English to bridge the communication gap that largely exists right here in the US.

Now that I've completed my Spanish minor I hope to incorporate it even more into my music, but my influences outside of that come from hearing Whitney Houston on Preacher's Wife to Alicia Keys, Barlow Girl, Shane and Shane, Gavin DeGraw, Christina Aguilera, Jimmy Needham, and many others. R&B, pop, rock, Jazz and Contemporary Christian music all have their place in influencing me and my music syle. I've had vocal training in classical as well as contemporary Pop styles, etc. and being able to write my own music gives me a chance to put my love for music, training/education, and all my influences together to create music specific to me as a person/musician with the chance to share my music and a part of my life with others.
I have co-lead the University Gospel Choir, I've joined a local band and performed multiple times with them, as well as semester performances of many different genres and decades of music including the Beatles, Motown, swing, showtunes, current pop, rock, and R&B songs.
