Biography

A thousand thoughts spin round my face
I know you miss them one by one

Thus begins Virtue, the latest endeavour from singer/songwriter, Sarah McCully.
Born on the island of Papua New Guinea, Sarah eventually settled in Southern Ontario where she continues to make her home. Growing up, Sarah gravitated towards music and theatre. From an early age, Sarah worked tirelessly at her craft. Devouring the various forms of art that crossed her path.
Soon after graduating college, Sarah was in a head-on collision that left her unable to walk for the better part of a year. It was during the subsequent year and a half of rehabilitation that Sarah began to grapple with the concepts of patience and progress: two themes that would permeate her music in the years to come.
While working on her debut EP, Sliver Of You, Sarah formed a partnership with guitarist/producer/co-writer, Justin Abedin (Jacksoul, Simon Wilcox). Through countless hours of writing and discussion, Sarah began to fully embrace her lyrical voice and from that core the sound of Virtue was born.
The lead track “Nothing” harkens back to the sounds of Fleetwood Mac with a nod to the Dixie Chicks. On the heart-wrenching ballad “Take With You”, Sarah displays her vocal prowess in the torch style of k.d.lang and Emmylou Harris. Eastern inflected newgrass is born on “Old Wounds” as the colours of Led Zeppelin and Sheryl Crow collide. With this palette, Sarah has created an album that embodies her at this moment: imperfect, triumphant and emboldened with the emotional honesty of the artist.
In Virtue, Sarah asks the listener to examine their own virtues, to decide for themselves who they want to be, and to act on that without fear.

Lyrics

Nothing

Written By: S.McCully & J.Abedin

A thousand thoughts
Spin round my face
I know you miss them
One by one
Join the line of men tried to lay me down
You find the edge
And rub it raw

I’m not your darling
You’re holding on to nothing
Learn the moments
You’re holding on to nothing
And nothing paints out my corners and
Calls you nightly
And nothing will wear me down

Spill your guts
Across my floor
No one stops you
This mess you’re making
Spin your line again on what you could have done
I’ll pretend you don’t
Ask for more

I’m not your darling
You’re holding on to nothing
Learn the moments
You’re holding on to nothing
And nothing paints out my corners and
Calls you nightly
And nothing will wear me down

I know others
Would drown for you
Why do you push me
Harder and harder
If the line of my life included you
You’d be mine
The moment I felt it

I’m not your darling
You’re holding on to nothing
Learn the moments
You’re holding on to nothing
And nothing paints out my corners and
Calls you nightly
And nothing will wear me down
I’m not your darling
You’re holding on to nothing
Learn the moments
You’re holding on to nothing
And nothing paints out my corners and
Calls you nightly
And nothing will wear me down

Old Wounds

Written By: S.McCully & J.Abedin

Your beard grinds along my skin
Leaves a red line in its wake
That fades like my memories
Of last night at your place

And all that you ask of me
Is less then I gave
Oh your audacity
Are you stupid or brave

‘Cause it’s been a long week of old wounds

I watch you cross the room
You’re moving like rain
Content with your conquest
And cool with the pain

Your eyes melt down my skin
And open the gate
Even though I hate you
I can’t leave this place

‘Cause it’s been a long week of old wounds

You turn and expect me
To follow you to my room
My heart won’t let me
But my body needs something to do

‘Cause it’s been a long week of old wounds

Sarah McCully - vocals
Justin Abedin - acoustic & electric guitars, banjo, mandolin, resonator guitar
Drew Birston - bass
Chris Lamont - drums
Ron Lopata - reed organ
Ravi Naimpally - tabla
Roger Travassos - percussion
