Sarah’s music is a blend of indie and roots music with an acoustic guitar and an intimate, flying voice.

Biography

Born and raised in North Carolina, music and writing have always been the roots in Sarah's life that continue to ground her today.

She sings of loss and life, joy and solitude, renewal and searching. Her powerful lyricism celebrates roots origins in an urban life and reifies the imagination through song.

Her recent album, Ladybirds, has meditative musings (Dublin, Ladybirds, Rough Stone), and explores the world outside with its human frailty (Return Return, Two, Blip). Sarah crafts these songs with a sound and identity that is uniquely her own.

Sarah currently lives in Tempe, Arizona.

Dublin

Dublin

I saw you , standing behind her
Looking my way
Pulling my knees down
I melt, into you
Its so easy to do
A little girl believes love will come true
Its so easy to do

On the first day we met
I stood on the shoulders of my fears and regreats
Then fell forward
Into your arms, lifting me up
Above the rest

Into the blinding light
You sent me soaring high
Til I couldn’t see through
And its so easy for you
Oh how you linger in all that I do
Its so easy for you

Down beneath where you lay
Against the walls that I climbed
The walls I broke free from
It was greater than me
The reasons to leave
And I hope that you saw

There was something inside of us holding us down
There was something irreverent, something profoundly
At ease, moving me
And its not easy to leave
So I took all the blame that you gave
Its not easy to see

And I tried as hard as I could
Into the blinding light
I stood, no looking back

So cheers to the man in the gold velvet hat
And cheers to the man who stands still in the back
I am nothing without them
Nothing before them too

So you walked in this bar with your head held high
With those eyes killing softly, with your girl and your pride
And I lay down before you in peace
But its not easy for me
Despite what you think, you think that you see
Its not easy for me

Into the blinding light
You send me soaring high
Til I, now can see through
That its so easy for you
Oh how you linger in all that I do
Its so easy for you

Ladybirds

Susie, will you please come home
I miss you when the day is done
There’s something to be said, for this voice inside my head
But it don’t match up to what you started
It don’t match up to what you started

Angels say that you’re still here
You say angels sing to ease my fear
But ain’t no angels standing here
When I’m alone and the wind is quiet
I’m alone and the wind is quiet

Oh did you fly away
Back to where you started from
Will you lead the way, and I’ll follow
Fly, fly, fly, fly...

Virginia, can you see me now
I miss you in the changing tides
There’s something to be said, for your faith inside my head
But it don’t match up to what you fought for
It don’t match up to what you fought for

Spent your life doing Christian good
Tryin to find your home and your motherhood
I hope you recognize and know your soul’s still good
Though you cursed that man beside you
You cursed that man who left you

Did you fly far away
Back to where you started from
We shall meet one day
Laugh together against the rising sun

Susie, won’t you please come back
We miss you when the day is done
There’s something to be said, for your ghost inside our heads
But it don’t match up to what we’re still missing
It don’t match up to what we’re missing

Can we meet in the skies so blue
And can I be your daughter in the next life to
Shall we dance the seasons through and through
Until we leave this past behind us
Let us leave this past behind us

Oh let us fly away
Back to where we started from
You can lead the way, and we’ll follow
Fly, fly, fly, fly, fly...

Rough Stone

Cancel your words, let’s not speak anymore
I thought I was something that I was not before
This bargaining, this teasing, let us turn back to grace
Before this danger so clear, slaps us clear cross the face

I jumped rather quickly to seek the unknown
But I rocked back to the edge of my heels made of stone

A deal has been made, and I set up the price
You bartered for more, but accepted this vice
And made passes, and invites, we walked on the line
All the while disregarding our failing divine

While I jumped rather quickly to seek the unknown
I rocked back to the edge of my heels made of stone

A heat passes your fingertips and into my hair
My cheeks flush with weakness and foreshadow despair
If I let this move on, and straight into the night
I might lose all control, which seems kinda pleasing at times

I could jump rather quickly to seek the unknown
Would I rock back to the edge of my heels made of stone

If I turned back the time, could we start once again
Would you forgive my foolish games, and all these shadows within
It’s your slow, tender, soulful ways that catches my smile
If we just seek out that honest place, we could be friends for a while

And if I jump rather quickly to seek the unknown
I hope that I find the way back to my heels made of stone

Return Return

Return Return

He asked me if he could step into my head
I let him proceed then I tried to pretend
I didn’t know him
I didn’t love him
But he could see right through these games I played

My crazy fear
She’s always here

He stayed there awhile insisting that I
Follow him to the ends and we’d kiss the desert sky
I said I’d think about it
Tried so hard to push it all away

My crazy fear
She’s always there

Figures of string pulling me down
Wonderin why I ain’t got no children now
Oh they keep telling me
Asking me
Pushing me down, down, down, down

My crazy fear

Rolling forwardly high above the cloudy sky, I try to feel my weight
Tumble downward toward the ocean blue, I think of you, and catch myself afraid
Don’t know the reason we don’t talk anymore
Dispel this treason, keeps me locked in his arms

My crazy fear

Sandbox

He wears her round his finger like a ring that’s lost its shine
But then shows her off conveniently to impress somebody’s mind
To make them smile and think a certain way, like he’s a certain kind of guy
Who just loves his girl above it all, but she don’t know he’s killing time

And I don’t know which way he’s lookin when he talks straight to my soul
He’s got one eye always behind me, and the other with that glow
Of knowing he’s charted here before, I’ll be a figment in his mind
He’s done this trip, and forced his grip til it’s time for movin on
And it’s so easy, tips his hat while breaking free
Free-wheelin dreamer is what he says he’s born to be

And I don’t know what’s wrong with me I want to show him all these things
To let him see the world a little differently instead of seeing it in chains
To make him smile and think a different way, like he’s a different kind of guy
Who could find his kindred soul to let his open heart take flight and make it easy
For that little boy he’s afraid to find

I wanna make it easy

Blip

Blip

Can you redeem what is seemingly lost
Can you repair if you can’t pay the cost
Does the bridge that lies broken get rebuilt in the end
Or the shadows that haunt you someday turn into friends

Oh it’s chaos that carries my body from here
Will this chaos deliver my soul from despair
Now I’m breathing the sky down south once again
But this time I can’t get enough
No this time I can’t get enough

Shall he free us before we can free ourselves
Is that peace there rejoicing alongside of my fear
Can the dreams that lay shattered be mistaken for grace
Or my prayers needing answers will the lord soon erase

Cause it’s chaos that carries my body from here
Will this chaos deliver my soul from despair
Now I’m breathing the sky down south once again
But this time I can’t get enough
No, lord this time I can’t get enough

Hear these sisters sing unto you
Let the brothers before you offer their voices to
Resign children to listen once more
Cradle salvation as you never did before

Cause this chaos will carry our bodies from here
And this chaos will deliver our souls from despair
Now I’m breathing the sky down south once again
This time I can’t get enough
Oh this time I can’t get enough

Two

Come down
Come down
We are waiting

Something in his eyes told me inside “don’t worry, baby, I’ll take care of you”
Oh, how can I trust you anymore

Unless you can take back this crazy day
Then I’ll take back all the time that I spent waiting too long
And I’ll believe all that you say
If you erase this crazy day from my mind

Bluest sky I ever saw
It fades away

Left it silent here
We looked up, you stood up, and walked off without a fight

Take back this crazy day
And I’ll take back all the time that I spent doubting you
I’ll believe all that you say
If you erase this crazy day from my mind

Come down
Come down
They are waiting for you

Love’s Confusing Joy

Tonight I’m courting you
Clever as you are, I’m slowly hunting you
Wanting you
I’ll follow you

Is it wrong for me to ponder how your touch could satisfy
Or how the bliss of your kiss could set me free to fly there,
and find where you been hiding out

Behind that tree you and me could sail the stars fantastic boy
You and me could sail the skies, yeah

Something in him makes me sway
Something in him makes me afraid
Something in him drives me crazy
But I’ll stay,
a little longer,
Hoping this time it’s gonna be right

Behind that tree you and me could said the stars fantastic boy
You and me could sail the skies, yeah

Cracks of Light

Written By: Sarah Roberts

Cracks of Light

Buried deep inside the barricade there
Birds sing sweetly for my love, my love
Calling cross the ocean, like stretching silken strands
See your hands behind these blood lines traveling
Clashing of the skies, clashing of the skies
Fevered majestic air
Carry my breath from here
Diving backward into blue
Pushes stillness through, yeah
Cracks of light crumble stone
Cracks of light crumble stone, opens wide, opens wide, oh
Motherhood stares back jokingly, makes me cry
Taller trees lean slightly to the left side, distracting the eyes
Fevered majestic air
Floating my conscious there
Diving backward into blue
Pushes stillness through, yeah
Cracks of light crumble stone
Cracks of light crumble stone, opens wide, opens wide, oh
Clashing of the stars, clashing of the stars

Rosewood

Take this boat
Sail on back to me, my love
Just open up that door in the front corner
There you’ll see, my love, all shiny to guide you home
On these wild, raging seas beneath your skin my love
The sooner you begin my love, the sooner we’ll be, yeah

I’ll catch you
Should you start to float to fast
Oh yes, my love
The sooner you see my love, the sooner we’ll be, yeah

Take this boat
Sail on back to me
