"soft and soothing vocals of Sarah Sadler"

WHERE IT STARTED

IN A PHRASE: This record brings back to remembrance the soft and soothing vocals of Sarah Sadler.

If you’re a person who likes to listen to music that isn’t going to bombard your life with energetic and boisterous sounds then Sarah Sadler is what you’re looking forward. This record is contemplative at times while offering accessible lyrics for the un-contemplative ear.

I see this newest offering from Sadler finding its way into the players and iPods of those who are blessed to have a committed relationship with someone else, especially within marriage. Take for instance the album’s best track, Dedicated. I’ll be surprised if this cut doesn’t get picked up or at least pitched to mainstream radio as it tells the story of a husband and wife who dedicate not only their songs but their lives to each other.

The rest of the CD follows the same musical vein; it never comes out of the thoughtful music that’s been made successful by artists like Norah Jones, Ginny Owens, and Nichole Nordeman.

One thing that for the most part Christian music is missing are artists who choose to show how God interacts with the relationships we have with all types of loved ones on this earth – husbands, wives, parents, brothers, sisters, friends and even a stranger on the street.

If it’s something we’ve been missing then artists like Sadler should be welcomed voices to add to the stock of our store’s shelves. Get Yourself Together. Pedaling Backwards, and the aforementioned Dedicated are the most driving cuts on the record musically, while the rest depend more on deep thought rather than memorable musical offerings.

Other great tracks on the CD are How Does It Feel and Where Do You Begin.

My final word…

If you’re a fan of the contemplative and thoughtful then this is a record made just for you. And if you’re new to the voice of Sarah Sadler, then I’d encourage you to give Where It Started a listen. I think you’ll be pleasantly surprised.

"organic pop with a slight country influence"

Sounds like … organic pop with a slight country influence, resembling Sandra McCracken, Leigh Nash, and Sheryl Crow.

Though it's been nearly six years since the release of her debut, we've not heard the last of Sarah Sadler just yet. During those six years, she got married while working as a Christian music publicist and a session singer in Nashville; she also never stopped developing music that better reflected her sound and style. Her father, Gary Sadler—an esteemed worship music writer ("Ancient of Days," "Be Unto Your Name")—recently launched a new indie record label called Audioluxe. First up: an attempt to revive his 25-year-old daughter's solo career with her follow-up project, Where It Started.

Fans of her first album should know that Sadler has successfully reinvented herself here—in more ways than one. Gone is the electronic Euro-pop reminiscent of Dido or Rebecca St. James, favoring instead a more organic pop sound with a slight country influence. It turns out that this is an even better fit for her sweetly lilting and breathy voice, recalling the styles of Sandra McCracken, Leigh Nash, and Sheryl Crow.

If that weren't enough to reach a whole different fan base, Sadler's songs forego the spiritual for relationship themes—some personal, some based on other friends' stories, and most all of them co-written with her father, who also produced and played the majority of the instruments. "Runaway" could possibly be interpreted as a Prodigal's song, challenging someone to return despite making mistakes, and "Get Yourself Together" offers motivation (To a friend? Self?) to move past fear and complacency. But the remainder of the songs primarily focus on love ("Eyes"), desire ("Where Do You Begin"), commitment struggles ("Freedom"), discerning whether to express feelings ("Unspoken"), breakup ("How Does It Feel"), and longing ("Overrated," "Dedicated").

Sadler's sophomore effort shows she's not only still active, but also headed in the right direction. Introducing Sarah Sadler, take two.

"Sadler's Long Wait Pays Off"

By Phil Anderson

For singer-songwriter Sarah Sadler, the long wait was worth it.
Six years after she delivered her 2002 self-titled debut album on Essential Records at age 19, Sadler's newly released sophomore effort, "Where It Started" (Audioluxe Record, 12 songs, 54 minutes), is a celebration of relationships and the things Sadler has learned in her journey through her early 20s.
The acoustic-based anthology of tunes showcases Sadler's exquisite vocals and songwriting skills.

Nashville-based Sadler teams with her father, musician and songwriter Gary Sadler, to co-write and produce songs on "Where It Started."

"Pedaling Backwards" and "Old Habits" are two examples of songs on this fine set that steer clear of pretense and cliches.

The independently released album is available at online record store CDBaby and is scheduled for distribution on Amazon.com, iTunes and select retail stores.

"Sarah's Return"

Sarah Sadler releases download album 'Where It Started'
AMERICAN pop singer Sarah Sadler, whose self-titled 2002 album produced the Cross Rhythms turntable hits "Running Into You" and "Beautiful", has made a belated return to the scene. Her second album 'Where It Started' is available for download from her MySpace page and will soon be available on iTunes. Said Sarah, "It's been a long time in the making, so in many ways it's surreal to say, but 'Where It Started' is FINISHED! I'm proud, excited, nervous (the good kind) and relieved! We've written, re-written, produced, re-produced, mixed, re-mixed, mastered and re-mastered the snot out of this record (not to mention going through more than a couple of debatable album titles). 'Where It Started' is a fitting title for multi-faceted reasons, but mainly because this record is a new start for me as an artist."

"Soothing Yet Upbeat"

I heard "Orbit" on the radio one day, and liked it, and then upon tracking it down, connected she is the same female artist that sings "Beautiful." I like her soothing expression and vocal sound found displayed in both slow and upbeat tracks of strumming guitar, drum, and electronica. - iTunes (Listener Review)

Bio

Singer-songwriter Sarah Sadler releases her sophomore record, Where It Started, the follow-up release to her 2002 self-titled debut. With an unconventional method of record making set out for mainstream success, the artist establishes herself as an emerging talent with solid songs and creative production. “We really wanted to make a record that didn't have rules,” Sarah says. “The title Where It Started came out of a lyric from a song on the record called ‘Pedaling Backwards’; it represents my feeling that this is the project that defines me in a musical capacity and is also something that I can be proud of as an artist. There are pros and cons to doing an independent record, but for us it was the right decision to go it alone this time around and show what we’re capable of.”

Teaming up with her father, Gary Sadler to co-write and produce Where It Started, the Nashville based artist says, “This record is homegrown from start to finish. It was a long time in the making, but well worth it when you can walk away with a project that you're excited about.”

With various musical influences from pop to country impacting her writing style, much of what draws the listener into Sarah's music is the relation to real life. “When I listen to music, I'm taken somewhere,” Sarah says. “Music is the soundtrack of life and the songs I find myself listening to over and over again are those songs that get me where I feel it personally. I try my best to write what I know, but I also try to write songs from others' perspectives in a way that I could easily connect to as well.”

As a third generation professional musician, Sarah got her start in music at the age of nine when one of her original compositions was recorded on a children's music project. With a strong musical family supporting her, Sarah has been writing and recording ever since. At the age of nineteen, Sarah signed to Nashville-based Essential Records and released her self-titled, debut record in 2002.

“Beautiful” from Sarah's debut release proved to be commercially successful and has been featured in numerous TV and Film projects, including the 20th Century Fox major motion picture release, “Just Married” starring Ashton Kutcher and Brittany Murphy.

Sarah’s latest artistic venture, Where It Started features 12 signature songs that highlight Sarah's breathy vocal and emotion as a performer. "Get Yourself Together," the album's opening track, gives an instant taste of the record’s steady theme of clever lyrics and tasteful blend of acoustic and electric guitars. “‘Get Yourself Together’ has really become my personal mantra,” Sarah says. “When we first wrote it, I saw the lyric like I was telling someone else to get it together, but the more I sang it, the more the words began to take on a whole new meaning for me and I knew right away that I was singing to myself.”

The radio-ready “Dedicated” features scenic lyrics paired with an instantly memorable melody while “Unspoken” catches the listener with its well-built, guitar-driven chorus. “Eyes,” a deeply heartfelt love song about love being “shown, not said,” engages haunting chords seamlessly woven with emotionally raw lyrics.

Where It Started shows Sarah's diversity as a well-rounded artist, all while staying true to the unique sound and feel that sets her apart. “This project is a way to better articulate who Sarah is musically,” says Gary Sadler about the record. “I love working with her - always have, and I'm really pleased with this collection of songs. It gives a glimpse into who Sarah Sadler is.”

“There's a lot of me that's out on the table with this record,” Sarah says. “It feels good though because I really believe in this project and these songs. I think that's worth putting yourself out there.”
