"Best Local Comedian"

We're giving Sarah Tollemache top honors this year despite her recent move to New York. The comedian spent a better part of the year here an was even featured on the Houston edition of Last Comic Standing season six. Tollemache amassed more laughs around town in less than a year than most joke-slingers would in two. Whether she's flying solo or part of an improv comedy troupe, she manages to give the audience fits. Thanks to some investigating (read: MySpace stalking), we know her family still lives in Houston, so we're guessing-and hoping-she'll drop back in sooner than later to wax hysterical about video games, sharing porno with her boyfriend and cheap prosthetic limbs. But don't be surprised if you see her before then on Letterman or Conan. Reader's Choice: Jacinto. - The Houston Press Best Of Edition

"Local funny gal jokes about video games, prosthetics and porn-star hairstyles"

Sarah Tollemache wins laughs pondering subjects such as how much Paul McCartney’s ex-sweetheart Heather Mills’s beautifully crafted prosthetic leg must have cost. Tollemache says she’d probably only be able to afford one with “cankles and varicose veins.” She also jokes about her man’s addiction to Halo 3. “I don’t know if you’d heard of it, but it’s this game that ruins relationships,” she says. She goes on to describe how she tried to bond with him by playing the
game but wound up just looking like a psycho shooting her gun up and down in the air.

Her timid stage presence adds to the humor of her act, especially when she’s describing her favorite thing to do with her boyfriend’s porn, which she says became “their porn” when they moved in together. Tollemache describes flipping through the triple-X mags to find a girl performing a disturbing sexual act and, as if she is completely aloof to what is going on in the scene, telling her stylist, “I really want to look like this girl.” Starting out the night will be fellow Houstonians Allegra Barnett, Melissa Nichols Vasquez and former Houston Press contributor Eric Dieckman.

Bio

Sarah Tollemache has been known to pull punches, but doesn't really tell it like it is. In fact, Sarah Tollemache lives in her own little world. As a child Sarah would listen to Eddie Murphy, George Carlin and Bill Cosby on cassette with her older brother. This is where Sarah got her inspiration to pursue comedy, not a normal little girl's dream. Sarah started honing in on her craft and eventually got voted Most Humorous in her eighth grade class. After high school, Sarah took a minor detour and thought that she wanted to pursue a career in music, but eventually she fell short on rent and had to sell her guitar and other child hood dreams. Then one day while hanging out in Austin saw an ad in the paper looking for comedians to try out for the Aspen Comedy Festival, so she decided to take a chance and that is the first time that she went up. She didn't do well, but she didn't do bad either and that is when she realized that there will always be someone worse than she was. So a few months later she discovered that the Houston Laff Stop had an open mic and was hooked then on out. After several years, she eventually rose in the ranks of Houston comedy and later won Houston's Funniest Person Contest in 2004. Now, Sarah Tollemache is fully determined to have a career in comedy. She now resides in New York City performing stand up, sketch and improv.
