"Girl Punk Band You Should Check Out"

Submitted by Jen on Wed, 12/19/2007 - 10:26.

Any band, which is influenced by Jagermeister, has the energy and raw sex dance appeal like Letigre mixed with hard edged yet feminine stage presence gets my vote – twice.

Meet Satan’s Candy – introducing Das Duchess Karolka (aka Carolyn Rohaly) on the bass, ROARsome who bangs the skins (aka Rory Lindo) and Elisa Thunderfingers, guitar goddess (aka Elisa Coish).

This Toronto all girl punk/rock band knows how to and have fun, minus the pretentious bull shit of some indie punk bands. On top of this – they get big points for wicked outfits. This can probably be attested to the fact that drummer Rory Lindo is also the co-founder of Damzel Doll Factory – the dress line and east end boutique, recently a prize player in L’Oreal fashion week, and the line that downtown hipster chicks are crushing on.

How did this trio of sugar coated sin come together? The girls met on the fashion circuit in Toronto a couple years back, formed fast friendships, decided that Toronto needed an all girls metal band that had ass shakin’ rock n’ roll qualities – and that was that. Although their original intention was a little more hardcore metal – their sound definitely incorporates a variety of styles, punk/rock/electro and new wave.

None of the members were in a band prior, and thus I give them extra kudos for getting together and forming Satan’s Candy. Being someone who’s always yearned to shake a tail feather and belt it out on stage – I know it’s daunting to start a band post age 24.

The creative threesome share the writing and development of songs and love the fact that this friendship has not only brought them closer together – but performing every decision – whether it’s what to wear, to how to ramp up the back beat, is deliciously fun and exciting.

I asked Das Duchess Karolka who, if anyone – she’d want to share a stage with, and with zero hesitation – “EAGLES OF DEATH METAL. (and for those of you who aren’t well versed in the hard rock / metal scene – this is the girl version of Motley Crue.)

Satan’s Candy played most recently at the Bovine Sex Club – stay tuned because they are a special Valentines Day performance; for you ladies who don’t mind dabbling between sweet and sinful.

"Satanic Style"

Every town needs a fashion band to poke fun at couture biz foibles and offer industry insiders a judgment-free opportunity to sport sheer muumuus and crocheted sundresses to sweaty basement gigs. T.O.'s take is Satan's Candy (www.myspace.com/satanscandyrocks), and the trio of fashion blogger Carolyn Rohaly , Doll Factory Studios damzel Rory Lindo and Elisa Coish held a private debutante debut Saturday, July 28. The set list included designer ditties like "Fashion Up Your Ass" along with general interest tunes "Cougs Rule" and "Ode To Jager". Look for public gigs this fall and a Fashion Week show in late October.

Bio

Combine a shot of L7 with a Ramones chaser and you get Satan's Candy. With the fierce ROARsome banging the skins, guitar goddess Elisa Thunderfingers, and Das Duchess Karolka on bass, Satan's Candy hits below the belt and leaves you breathless.

A Satan's Candy show has glitz, glam, safety pins, and rock 'n roll swagger. The gals in the band are as sweet and sassy as the name implies. ROARsome is a successful fashion designer and store owner, Elisa Thunderfingers is an art curator, and Das Duchess Karolka runs a film director's office and writes a praised fashion blog. Together, the three play catchy rock and punk-tinged songs that you'll sing along with the first time you hear them.

What's the story?

ROAR and Das Duchess met in 2004 on the fashion show circuit before they started playing music together. In January 2007, they were looking for a guitar player when they met Thunderfingers at a Priestess show. Within a year, they wrote some killer songs. Their first show was to a sellout crowd and was mentioned in NOW Magazine. In their first five months of performing, Satan's Candy played Toronto's legendary El Mocambo and Bovine Sex Club.
