Bio

SATORI CIRCUS is one of Detroit’s longest lasting performance artists. Beginning as an idea of combining elements of music, film, theatre, slapstick, vaudeville, German Theatre, poetry and movement, SATORI CIRCUS has become the alter ego of Russell A. Taylor for 20 years.
Getting his beginnings in rock and punk bands throughout the Detroit Metro area in the early 80’s (most notable - FUGITIVE POETRY), Taylor decided to take art mediums he was most interested in and combine them to create a hybrid type of performance which later was dubbed by the local media as performance art.
In 2006, after a long ‘walkabout’ as Taylor describes, SC had its first complete performance art piece in over 4 years titled, MOSES:39, based on the life of Taylor’s father. And in 2007, another piece titled, FUNY AS HELL, derived from Dante’s Divine Comedy, and in 2008 he premiered a 45 minute performance piece for children at the Comerica TasteFest, titled Child-Proof. All performances were widely anticipated by both the local media and past supporters, and covered extensively.
2009 has had SC performing extensively. In January, SC performed at Yale University in New Haven. In March, sang the National Anthem for the Detroit Roller Derby Girl’s National Championship. This past summer, was nominated by the Detroit Music Awards for ‘Best Live Performance’ and was nominated for ‘Best Actor in an Original Play’ by the Wilde Awards, and voted Detroit’s Best Performance Artist by Real Detroit Weekly.
Recently SC embarked upon a 4-hour performance in conjunction with Art Detroit Now, which covered the Woodward and Cass Avenue areas. Stopping at and performing 20 to 30 minute performances / all original. In order of appearance: Scarab Club, CCS Galleries, DIA, Detroit Artist Market, Cass Café’ and work•detroit. He has also been a guest performer for Theatre Bizarre’s Halloween Party; DAMNEDII; Erotica Ball III; and performing along with Torch with a Twist at Cliff Bell’s…All in Detroit.
Currently, SC is writing two new full-length performance art pieces slated for 2010.
