Saving Grace – Band Biography

The evocative movement of strings, soulful lyrics and unique style are defining features of one of Sydney’s newest up-and-coming bands ‘Saving Grace’. Drawing from inspirations such as Damien Rice, Ben Harper, The Beatles, Lior, Crowded House and Ben Folds, the five-piece band brings into harmony the modern sounds of violin, cello, percussion, keys, acoustic guitar and original lyrics of singer-songwriters Sam McNeill and Adrian Leung.
Writing and singing together since high school, Sam and Adrian launched into Saving Grace in their gap year spent teaching in England. Both now studying The Sydney Conservatorium of Music, they were joined by fellow student Sonja Schebeck on violin and asked Amelia Rutherford, studying arts at Sydney University, to complete the sound with the deep bass vibe of the cello. Conservatorium student, Rob Di Marzo on percussion is the latest addition to the band, bringing colour and movement to the bands eclectic harmonies.
Each of the five band members have broad musical backgrounds’ spanning more than 15 years. They’ve used this experience to create a unique sound that is enjoyed by a wide array of listeners that appreciate their universal approach and relevance.
The raw, earthy and thick textures of Saving Graces’ melodies are matched with emotive lyrics, full of life’s experiences and a different take on the world. The music leaves a deep impression with its powerful, catchy melodic lines and lyrics that each individual can identify with in their own way. Appearances at The Basement, The Vanguard, the Hopetoun Hotel, Manning Bar, the Annandale Hotel, Candy’s Apartment, Bar Broadway, Head Quarters Bar, The Excelsior, The Cat and Fiddle and the Sandringham Hotel have fed their growing profile with Sydney audiences.
Saving Grace launched their much-anticipated debut EP on December 22nd 2006 at The Gaelic Theatre, Surry Hills to a crowd of friends and fans. Recorded at Big Jesus Burger Studios by Simon Berkleman (The Crustaceans), mixed by Scott Horscroft (Silverchair, The Sleepy Jackson) and mastered by Chris Townend. The EP release, ‘River Road’, was very well received and is a taste of things to come from this young up-and-coming band.
