SINGAPORE: A full-time national serviceman has emerged as the winner in Channel NewsAsia's Get Rea! song writing competition, beating over 130 others to walk away with the top prize.

Viewers were invited to vote for their favourite song from 10 finalists shortlisted.

And Davyd Chong's 'Make It Through' was a clear favourite from the word go.

For weeks, it stayed in the number one spot based on SMS votes cast by viewers, slipping to position number two only on one day in the almost month-long contest.

In the one month since voting started, Get Rea! received more than 6,000 SMSes.

These made up 40 percent of the total score, while a panel of judges accounted for the remaining 60 percent.

And, most of the judges also picked Davyd's song.

Still, the aspiring musician was speechless when the Get Rea! team surprised him with the results at his camp on Friday.

Davyd's song was one of 137 entries Get Rea! received for the competition.

It will be the theme song for the reality-based current affairs show, which airs three times a week.

SINGAPOREANS and Malaysians may sometimes bicker, but half a world away on a theatre stage, they will be united.

Next February, Singaporean and Malaysian students in London will be putting up Merdeka: The Rock Musical, about the turmoil in Malaya during the period leading up to independence in the '60s.

The show's director, Singaporean Marcus Lim, 23, said that while Singapore and Malaysia may not see eye-to-eye on certain issues, 'on the ground', there are no real issues between the people.

'I think that this is a good time for us to collaborate and relive the real issues that people in those times faced,' he added.

The musical's producer is Malaysian Fauziah Marzuki, a third-year business management student at London's Kings College.

Marcus said his friends were initially apprehensive about the project.

'When we were writing the script, people kept telling us to be careful because of the sensitivity of the topic but I reiterate, we aren't discussing the political aspect,' said the literature and film student.

The musical, he said, was to 'show people that we aren't so different'.

It took the production team four months to put it together and it will play over three nights at London's Greenwood Theatre.

Casting is still ongoing for the five main parts and 10 supporting roles.

Said Marcus: 'If you are a Singaporean or Malaysian who studies in London, we'd love to have you on the team.'

And yes, do expect rock music.

Imperial College electrical engineering major Andrew Liew, 23, said: 'There will be hard-hitting parts like the scenes with riots... So the music tends to get heavier for this part.'

King's College law student Davyd Chong, 23, said: 'We are trying to find sponsors and are working on a really tight budget.'

And if all goes well, they plan to bring the musical here next July.
