Biography

scarlet | snow : Isaiah 1:18 "Come now, let us reason together," says the LORD. "Though your sins are like scarlet, they shall be as white as snow.

Although the band’s name may suggest a conflict in meaning, the music and message of Scarlet Snow illustrates the complexities of the Divine coming in contact with the fallen. The penetrating lyrics and aggressive musical styles of this Athens, Georgia quintet poses to set new standards in communicating a message of faith, hope, and love to anyone who hears it.

“We’re definitely a rock band,” says the thirty-something year old keyboard player. “But the twist is that the band’s music is epic, face-melting truth.”

Influenced by a wide-ranging collection of artists such as ColdPlay, Jars of Clay, The Black Crowes and Sarah McLachlan, the band released their first LPs entitled, “Turn Up Your Lamp.”

“We never intended to cut a record to sell”, states keyboardist and writer Mike Cowan. “‘Turn Up Your Lamp’ was an experiment. Some might say an experiment gone awry. We were just developing a sound. The record is a mixture of styles. We used these songs and this experience to capture what we were about. We found the songs and the styles with the most truth in them, and used that same well when writing our newest music.”

Turn Up Your Lamp was tracked in Statham, Georgia with producer/Engineer Chris Combs of the band, The Sum. The indie album successfully finds balance between conflicting styles. From Coldplay to Passion Worship, southern-rock to country, “Turn Up Your Lamp” became a catalyst for the band.

In mid 2006, the band signed an Artist Development Contract with Main Street Music out of Nashville. In August, they began tracking the new album, which to date, has not been named. Currently in post-production, they expect a February 2007 release date. The new record, produced by Patrick Holt, is a solid platform for the band as they move deeper into their message. 2005 and 2006 were years of deep tragedy and hurt for members of Scarlet Snow. Their struggles and triumphs are expressed in these new songs.

Lyrically, Scarlet Snow explores vulnerable, introspective themes of love and despair, truth and beauty, courage and fear. Suzanne, lead vocalist, insists that their fundamental message is a positive one. “Most of the Christian music I hear hasn’t helped me though my own trials. Most of this music today is bubbly, happy, feel good music. This is great, but it’s not a message that will sustain you when your world collapses. We call these type of songs, ‘Jesus Cakes.’ They are sweet and tasty, but you just can’t live on them.”
