"Scarlett in the Cellar"

In this postmodern sounding chamber, somewhere betwixt gypsy folk, soulful blues and raw talent, you'll find a dreamy vocal love affair, virtuoso fiddle playing and many, many bizarre stories. How these two girls delight on so many levels perplexes me. Set to cause a stir which will send ripples in many directions. - The Oxford Cherwell

Bio

Founded by two young classically-trained music students, Flora Curzon and Hannah Murphy whilst the two were traveling together in Vietnam in April 08.
With Flora on mandola/vocals and Hannah on guitar/vocals, 'Scarlett in the Wilderness' began as a busking band. The two sang their own unique gypsy covers of popular songs, with Flora's pure higher register voice and Hannah's huskier Nina Simone-like voice complimenting each other perfectly.

Back in England after their travels with Hannah on accordion (and occasional beat box flute!) and Flora on fiddle, they then moved to the streets of Oxford and started writing their own "gypsy blues" material. In these songs they drew upon their classical influences, mixing virtuosic violin playing with typical traditional Balkan rhythms, soulful bluesy vocals and lyrics range from the poignant to the absurd.

They were later joined by Dylan-esq singer-songwriter Joel Philimore on guitar and Xander Wright on all things percussion (namely bongos to add some latin, carnival and samba grooves) resulting in a fuller sound. Soon the band began playing packed-out gigs at many Oxford venues such as The Cellar, Frewin Court and at Inspiral Lounge, Camden.

Normally found singing and dancing wildly on stages and street corners, sporting burlesque attire.
