"Breaking Bread with ScatterBrain"

Scatter Brain aka Julian Quinones is a young artist on the come up and coming from a small market like Canada he is on his daily grind. With a mixtape and his debut album dropping last year. It seems skys are not only the limit but the starting point for Julian (ScatterBrain) and hiphop music in the small town of Bolton. We sat down and broke bread with Scatter Brain to know whats going on.

Yeah, so not many of the folks at home know we use to go to highschool together, but that being said I always use to remember you playing the guitar getting your “John Mayer” on why the change to hiphop?

haha.. yah, playing guitar was definitely a passion of mine when I was younger. I wouldn’t necessarily say that there was a change from that to hip hop because hip hop has always been there. It was just me experimenting with different genres and basically trying to expand on my musical abilities.

What are some of your biggest inspiration?

As cliche as it may sound.. day to day life is my biggest inspiration. Everything I write about in my songs is usually based around personal experiences and situations that I might be dealing with.

Scatter Brain: No More Questions

Scatter Brain: Back to Reality

Bolton Ontario eh? What’s the music scene out there?

The music scene in Bolton is definitely poppin’ off. For the past two years a group of guys called the “B. Boys” have been putting together shows called “B-Stocks”, which I have had the chance to perform in many times. It is definitely a blessing to be a part of this whole movement. I’ve met so many different artists and I’ve gained a lot of fans because of these shows.

Mexican/ Canadian? Have your roots played a role in your music or influenced your Music in anyway?

I would say that the Canadian in me definitely comes through in the music that I create. I tend to make a lot of references to places and things that might go over someones head if they’re not familiar with the culture up here. I also grew up listening to Mexican/Latin music and it’s cool because you never know when I might come across something I can sample and make a beat out of. A lot of hidden gems in Spanish music.

Top 5 dead or alive? From any genre and why?

I will stick to hip hop on this one. Jay-Z, Kanye West, Eminem, Common, Gang Starr. I just feel like these artists have done so much for hip hop. They’re true icons and extremely talented artists.

How old are you? And how long you been making music?

I’m 22. Began rhyming when I was 12. Making beats at 15. Releasing music when I was 20.

So your 1st album came out August 20th, how Does that feel? I’m sure its been a long time coming for you.

Yup, my debut album is finally here. It’s a huge dream come true and the response that I’ve been getting is incredible. The entire album is written and produced by yours truly and I have guest appearances from other Canadian greats such as Moka Only, D-Sisive and Mic Boyd.

What’s next for you?

I’m at the point where I’m trying to set-up shows and mini tours in Ontario. I just want to get the new album to as many people as I can and really get the ball rolling. - Daily Antics

"Ladies and Gentleman :ScatterBrain"

Its definitely weird sometimes when your in high school and you never know someone future ambitions. Its funny cause I know he was into school playing on his guitar for all the ladies. Who is he you ask? Thats ScatterBrain of course I posted something about him a while back talking about his mixtape, but I must say I'm a bit behind with this. I'm talking about his music video. Its his 1st production if I am not mistake and to be its a banger. Shows off the Canadian flavor like he only knows how. Its a good look for music in Canada. Of course we have Justin Beiber. Drake. K-OS and Kardinal Offishal, but that doesnt mean we still done have great talent seeping through the cracks. Scatter Brain is one of the homies and I believe is one recognized. I hope one day I can interview him, but well see thats another time another place check out the video after the jump:

"Bolton Hip Hop Artist Drops Record"

A Caledon resident has just released his first full hip-hop album after deciding two years ago to turn a long-time hobby into a fulltime career.

Julian Quinones, aka ScatterBrain, 22, released his debut album on August 20. Copies will be available for purchase from him at performances, and also on iTunes.

The CD is written and produced by ScatterBrain himself, but it's not his first foray into the area. He previously wrote and produced a five song EP that he used to break his way into performing.

Quinones started on this path when he moved to Caledon from Queretaro, Mexico at the age of 10 and began listening to hip-hop shortly after his arrival. At 12 he began writing his own music, and at 15 he began experimenting with "sampling".

"I take old music and I turn it into my own. So I have my own home studio and I've been doing it since I was 15," Qinones explained of sampling. "That's the fun part."

But it was only two years ago that he decide that this was what he wanted to do with his life.

"I was going to college in London - Fanshawe - and it didn't go too well for me. I got kicked out. I didn't know what to do, so I went back to hip-hop and I've been doing it super serious since," the Humberview Secondary School grad explained.

He started out performing at house parties in London and has also made several appearances at Main Street Station in Bolton.

ScatterBrain believes his music appeals to many people, but knows his target audience right now is a younger demographic. "I would say mostly kids my age, the college crowd. And I'm just trying to get out to the high school kids... My grandma likes it, but I think she's a bit biased," he joked.

While he admits that his music does contain the occasional swear word, it's not violent in nature like the music of some other mainstream hip-hop artists. "That's just not who I am."

Within the next five years Quinones hopes to make a name for himself and be a bit more established.

"I hope to be touring different countries and stuff like that," he told The Enterprise.

So far the hip-hop artists has his EP and fist album, as well as two music videos to his credit.

ScatterBrain's first performance after the release of his album was August 21 at Maintstreet Station, where he performed for 'B-Stock 6', courtesy of the B-Boys radio team.

Bio

ScatterBrain is one of Canada’s best up-and-coming hip hop artists.
The 23-year-old is not only a force to be reckoned with on the M-I-C but he is also a very talented music producer. “I don’t want to be looked at as just another rapper who can make a beat. I’m a songwriter. I love taking a single idea and developing it into a complete piece of music.”

In the summer of 2009, ScatterBrain released his first ever solo project… the “Don’t You Know” EP. This project contains 5 songs entirely written and produced by ScatterBrain himself. With the strength of this release he had the opportunity to perform at numerous live events across Ontario sharing the stage with artists like DL Incognito, Theology 3, DJ Grouch and more…. All the while attracting new heads to his growing fan base.

Fast-forward through a year of writing and recording and there you have it, the debut album “No More Questions”. This project was released through his very own label “Think Classic Records” and features his best work to date. Once again, ScatterBrain handled all the production and even managed to find guest spots for fellow Canadian hip hop artists such as Moka Only, D-Sisive and Mic Boyd.
