School for the Dead

School for the Dead

BandRockPop

Super tight quirky pop, campground lullabies, new wave, moving ballads, a country hoedown, space rock, and what have you, all populate their enchanting shows. But one common thread spans it all; delicious, quotable lyrics and memorable (and sometimes heartbreaking) melodies.

Biography

Favorites of the International Pop Overthrow as recently heard on MTV's Made and on National Public Radio's Open Mic.

A guy named Henning (that's his first name) writes and sings the songs in School for the Dead. That's primarily what one needs to know about this band. In fact, Henning, just recently won the WRSI (one of Rollingstone's Top 10 Radio Stations) Singer Songwriter Contest. Yay.

Members of School for the Dead have been in bands with and/or recorded with such luminaries as Pedro The Lion, Mark Mulcahy (Miracle Legion), Chris Collingwood (Fountains of Wayne), Lloyd Cole, Joe Pernice (Scud Mountains Boys, The Pernice Brothers) and Tao Rodriguez-Seeger.

School for the Dead has shared the stage with Jane Siberry, Evan Dando, Robyn Hitchcock, Freedy Johnston, Mates of State, Of Montreal, J. Mascis, Fountains of Wayne, Martin Sexton, and Ivy among many others.

Photobooth Curtain

Written By: Henning Ohlenbusch

Photo Booth Curtain

The photo booth curtain
The girl on my knee
One thing’s for certain
She doesn’t hate me
I’ve got a lot to learn from that girl.

Well, I dropped a dollar
On the photo booth floor
She starts to holler
“We can’t afford anymore!”
I’d need a lot to earn for that girl.

Well, I saw a lady
Out in the crowd
She points at my baby
Says she’s laughing to loud
We’ve got a lot to learn in this world.

Don’t be like that.
You know better.
Don’t be like that girl.

As we develop
We harness our youth
It takes just three minutes
And a photo booth.

Don’t be like that.
You know better.
Don’t be like that girl.

Well, I got a picture of all that I missed
A permanent fixture of another girl I never kissed
I’ve got a box full of these girls

There was an instant of perfection, it came in a flash
It’s in a black and white collection, but I couldn’t get the feeling to last
For that girl

As we develop
We harness our youth
It takes just three minutes
And a photo booth.
The photo booth curtain
The girl on my knee
One thing’s for certain
She doesn’t hate me

Rock and Roll Camper

Written By: Henning Ohlenbusch

We can save our money
Invest it in a camper
Drive across the country
And turn around again

We’ll decorate our camper
With strings of paper lantern
Hang a plastic panther
On our CB antennae

We putt across the country
With our windshield wipers squealing
There’s a road-side attraction
Let’s pull into a few spots

We can take a picture
Of our Rock and Roll Camper
Leaning on a palm tree
Or half-way up a mountain.

Part way through the tunnel
We lose our reception
We made it through the Rockies
The sun in the sky above the water’s been waiting
You and for me in our Rock and Roll Camper
To see the world
To see the world

We might see a tornado
Or a flooded Baptist graveyard
Maybe in the desert
We’ll find a dying lizard

At night beneath the kudzu
The crickets screaming murder
We got sand in the camper
From our quest for sand dollars

We try to cross the border
They search us for an hour
We played catch with pebbles
Until they finally let us through

We pull into the slow lane
Our camper radio blaring
“We came to take it up”
In our Rock and Roll Camper

Half-way through the tunnel we lose our reception
We made it through the Rockies
The sun in the sky above the waters been waiting
And I call it’s you and me versus the world
Armed with just a camper and a flash-busted camera
We can’t go wrong.

We can’t go wrong.

Omnivore

Written By: Henning Ohlenbusch

I’m a dinosaur
When I see all the kids arm in arm, swaying back-and-forth
A dinosaur
When they’re hopeless and they’re young
And they’re getting younger everyday
A dinosaur

And I’m an omnivore
And it makes me uncomfortable that meat was an animal
An omnivore
Yeah, it makes me uncomfortable that meat was an animal

I am confident
But it breaks my heart in two to see them so in love with you
I’m confident
That the lesson that they’ll learn today
Is what they have, they’ll take away
I’m confident

Your eyes are sad and puffy
He rides off on his Huffy
You swear you’ll never wash your hands again
It’s been a long, long day
It’s the longest day you’ve had
It’s a long, long day when he’s away

But you’re durable
There’s an endless situation
There’s a longing that’s incurable
You’re durable
There’s an endless situation
There’s a longing that’s incurable
Adorable
There’s an endless situation
There’s a problem that’s ignorable
Adorable
There’s an endless situation
There’s a problem that’s ignorable
You’re durable
Yeah yeah you’re durable
Yeah yeah you’re durable

Set List

If we do a cover, we generally just do it once and then retire it. We HAVE done covers by They Might Be Giants, XTC, Robyn Hitchcock, The Monkees, Split Enz, The Waitresses, Camper Van Beethoven, and Velvet Underground for example.

That's not what we do, though. We write, arrange, and perform our own hooky moving pop music.

We can play from five minutes to several hours with anywhere between one and five members. Here's a set list from one of our last gigs at Pete's Candy Store in Brooklyn:

Uncomfortable
Back To School
Something's Taking Over
Thug
Save My Place
Journal of Lies
Map
Superhero
One Lady Dancing
Disgruntled Lover
Photobooth Curtain
Omnivore

That probably doesn't mean anything to you since, if you are reading this, you probably don't know these songs.
