SCILLA

How gorgeous is this woman? This is Swiss singer/songwriter Scilla Siekmann who has the dubious honour of reaching the top 10 on the Eurovision Song Contest in 2010 with her song “Barbie Doll”. She is definitely a lot more plastic and mainstream than my usual fare but I took a listen to her new single and it’s really quite good.
Scilla has a honey and treacle voice that sounds like a cross between Betty Boop and Tallulah from Bugsy Malone and she is as cute as a button.
Now residing in the States after receiving degrees in music business and independent music production from the Musician’s Institute of Hollywood and UCLA, Scilla is hoping to break out in the US market. She cites Etta James, Aretha Franklin, Amy Winehouse and Joss Stone as influences and I definitely think I hear some Katie Melua and Norah Jones in there too.
Based on her Neo-Cabaret set, Scilla has released her self-titled single Scilla through Amazon.co.uk and iTunes and I’m expecting great things from her in the future. The single features three tracks and I was really impressed by the level of production and the originality of her songs. This is not the usual standard that you’d expect from a music student straight out of university but then Scilla is obviously not your average musician. LUGANO/LOS ANGELES - Parliamo di un’autoproduzione di tre tracce, che Scilla Siekmann (è questo il suo nome per intero, ndr) ama definire di matrice neo-cabaret: «In questo stile troviamo jazz, soul e rhythm and blues…», ci spiega entusiasta. «I miei maggiori punti di riferimento sono Etta James, Aretha Franklin, Amy Winehouse e Joss Stone…», continua. E all’interno delle tre composizioni, a tutti gli effetti, le due regine e coloro che ne hanno colto a piene mani l’eredità risuonano con nitidezza, anche perché Scilla ci sa fare, sia con le sue modulazioni vocali, sia dal punto di vista interpretativo. Che non è affatto da sottovalutare, inoltre, è anche il suo metodo di scrittura: sono sue, infatti, strofe e musiche di “Remind What Love Is” e di “You Can’t Break Me” – entrambe realizzate con l’ingegnere del suono Ichi Suezawa e la supervisione del produttore Steve Lindsey (Marvin Gaye, Temptations, Celine Dion, Bruno Mars…) –, mentre ha lavorato con l’apporto dell’amica e collega Nitanee Paris per il testo di “Champagne And Sugar”. Brano, quest’ultimo, con cui, negli Stati Uniti, Scilla ha vinto il West Coast Songwriters International Song Contest 2013 e per il quale si è aggiudicata il Silver Award nella categoria vocal/jazz al 29th Annual Mid-Atlantic Song Contest. Anche nel Regno Unito, nel contempo, la giovane ticinese non è passata inosservata, poiché la sua canzone ha ottenuto una menzione d’onore allo Uk Sognwriting Contest 2013.

Con questo suo nuovo ep (disponbile su iTunes), Scilla documenta un cambiamento di rotta: tra il 2010 e il 2011, oltre ad avere partecipato a Die grössten Schweizer Talente, già si era fatta notare dal pubblico con due brani (“Barbie Doll” e “Masquerade”) – di matrice pop-rock, però – che portò alle selezioni dell’Eurovision Song Contest. «È vero, è così, c’è stato un cambiamento… Ma “cambiamento” non credo sia il termine più adatto… Possiamo parlare di maturità, di crescita…».

Da qualche tempo la cantante ha lasciato Lugano, dal 2010 infatti vive a Los Angeles, mantendosi con quanto guadagna grazie alla sua arte, tra concerti nei club e la realizzazione di canzoni e musiche per le emittenti televisive… «Se tornerò a Lugano? Non credo… In Ticino riuscire a vivere soltanto di musica, almeno per il momento, mi sembra un po’ difficile…». In America, invece, i sogni pare si trasformino in realtà… A Scilla è successo…
