New Jersey’s Scott DeCarlo, a lead vocalist, songwriter and guitarist, is a pioneer in “21st Century Rock.” Geographically, the East Coast lost another good ole boy when the former NJ Police Sergeant moved to Nashville to pursue music. Our loss is Country Music’s gain.

“Scott’s intensity, admiration and passion make him a truly dynamic performer,” says producer and career musician, Biff Watson. His unique blend of street smarts, strength, musical ability and powerful country voice create a new sound in the country music field. DeCarlo’s music is inspired and infused by a variety of musical greats such as Garth Brooks, Freddy Mercury, Elton John, Elvis and Tim McGraw.

In 2000, DeCarlo started performing at Kenny’s Castaways in NY’s West Village. By 2012, he was releasing his 10 song debut album, “A Whole Kind of Crazy,” and performing throughout New England with ecstatic crowd response.

Country radio is now playing DeCarlo’s debut single “Havin’ a Good Time.” Starting out with an almost narrative intro, DeCarlo’s big voice takes you by surprise. It has relatable lyrics for those who have lived the good times and those wish to…. The song is a party and its chorus is bound to make this edgy song into a party anthem.

Scott Decarlo continues to reside in Nashville. He is writing for his next LP and hopes to record and release a full-length album in 2013.

There sure are a lot of new talents making their voices heard on the country scene this year, and one of the most promising has got to be New Jersey native Scott DeCarlo. He has one fresh, summer perfect, radio ready single, “Havin’ A Good Time,” circulating right now (listen below!), and it is sure to make you want to ditch the the 9 to 5 and head out for a cold drink and some sunshine (As I write this, it is a beyond beautiful day outside, and I really want to do just that!).
We took a few minutes to chat via phone recently, and DeCarlo shared with me that he wrote the song in between his move from NJ to Nashville, where he’s lived for about a year now. He said that basically, “I’m an all around have a good time kind of guy,” and from the amount of joking around he did during the interview, I’d say that’s probably true.
Scott struck me as not only a down to earth kind of guy, but also someone who’s willing and able to roll with the punches, an attribute that folks need if they’re gonna make it in a tough industry like the music biz. On top of his easy going personality though, he’s really got the talent to make in the long run, and I think that’s pretty clear in his current single alone (so be sure to listen!).
In addition to pushing “Havin’ A Good Time,” DeCarlo is working on a self-financed EP, and he already has about twelve or so songs in the works. When asked to classify his “sound” he said it has a “real edgy rock” vibe, and he claims a wide variety of influences from his mother’s favorite, Elvis to Queen to Skynyrd. So, hopefully, we can expect to hear more from him soon!

I definitely rock a little harder than most but am honored that the Country fans appreciate what I do.

I am slow to call myself a songwriter by Nashville’s standards. Nashville is flooded with GREAT writers. When I decided to move here, I did so to learn how to write a great song. I spent the first few years just being a fly on the wall hesitant to say or do anything more than be a sponge and absorb knowledge. I do write and recently starting co writing a lot more than I had previously.


What are you working on right now? New album? Touring? New video?
Right now is the most amazing time for me because it’s creative time. The process of writing and trying to finish the rest of the “I See Trouble Comin’” album is so exciting.
The video for the title track is out and I’m so proud and humbled at the response it is getting but at the same time, we are working on setting up touring for spring of 2014.

Well, band is amazing and we rock a few cool covers but there is no better feeling than when we cover the “Big and Rich” hit, “Save a Horse, Ride a Cowboy.”

Who are your musical influences?
I could be here for weeks telling you about ALL of my influences, it stems from 50s and 60s Elvis, Dion, Sinatra, through 70’s, 80’s Rock & Southern Rock Lynyrd Skynyrd, 38 Special, ZZ Top, Stevie Ray Vaughan and then The 90’s through Today’s Country- Tim McGraw Travis Tritt, Keith Urban etc, but seeing Garth Brooks live in Central park when I was a kid really electrified me.

Has social media changed/influenced your career?
Social media has been wonderful for me especially since the first song release last year “Havin’ a Good Time.”
If someone hears the song on the radio in West Virginia and they have friends in Alabama, the social media families on twitter and Facebook grow. I watched it happen and was blown away.
I think the thing I love the most about social media, is the fact I can personally communicate and say thank you to someone who appreciates what I do.

Tell us something about yourself that not many people know, but you wish they did.
I do my own stunts!
I’m a big jokester. I love making people laugh almost as much as I love showing them a great time at a show.

East Rutherford cop, musician to hold benefit concert to gather toys for needy

Nearly a decade ago, with his acoustic guitar and tousled black hair, Scott DeCarlo started out as a solo artist performing a progressive rock style of music and lyrics reminiscent of Bon Jovi.

Today, the freshly sheared East Rutherford police sergeant, who is "not a morning person," and moonlights as a musician, has a few presents to offer: a new band and a new, evolved sound that fuses rock, pop and country. Toss in a gig to help get holiday gifts to Newark kids.

The Scott DeCarlo Six—also comprising lead guitarist Dave Crum of Ridgefield Park, rhythm guitarist Chris Hanson of New Milford, bassist Bobby Fuchs of Little Ferry and drummer Sam Fishman and keyboardist Jason Krebs of Glen Rock—have been playing together for two years and are set to perform at the Fourth Annual Toy Collection concert for St. Lucy's Church in Newark, at Mexicali Live in Teaneck, on Saturday, Dec. 11. DeCarlo grew up in East Rutherford.

His mom was a single parent raising three boys, so there were unique challenges, the singer says. He has supported the church for years and has learned that gifts from the heart are the best.


DeCarlo said music helped him stay out of trouble as a kid growing up in Newark. Now he wants to help other kids who are growing up there.
"Every gift&especially family and people who care, is precious," DeCarlo says.

He also hopes the charity music event yields more toys this year. "Last year, we got five bags of toys. This year, I want to do 20," he says.

And who knows? Maybe one of those kids could get the gift of music: a starter guitar. DeCarlo smiles. It's one of the few gifts he received as a kid—and helped keep him out of trouble, he says.

"I got into music because I was always grounded. So I got a guitar, sat there and learned how to play it," DeCarlo recalls. During a recent rehearsal at a Ridgewood studio, the band practiced a dozen songs before sitting down with the South Bergenite to discuss the music—which comes together in a myriad of influences.

The band's songwriting is primarily done by DeCarlo—for now. "As a songwriter, I've evolved," he says. "It's more than just sitting down and writing. As a band, Jason and I sit down to hash out and get deeper as a unit," DeCarlo says.

DeCarlo adds that he gets a lot of support from the police department and that his "day job" helps him to be a better bandmate.

"You understand how to deal with different personalities, points of view and angles. It shows me to be forthcoming with all information, in detail. It's a growing experience, for sure," DeCarlo says.

Fuchs maintains that the group is like a friendship—with give and take on all sides.

"I already knew Dave&met Scott, found Jason&we're really just six friends that have a good time together," Fuchs says.

Fuchs maintains that it's the instruments, genres and attitudes that help define the music that has taken them all over the East Coast for gigs. But the group is happy to bringing their music home for this year's holiday benefit concert.
