Biography

Honest and intelligent, the acoustic-driven pop-rock of Scott Moses Murray takes a fresh, imaginative look at the human condition.

Murray has worked as a volunteer in Africa, South America, Eastern Europe and the jungles of Papua New Guinea building a school, a hospital, a bridge or simply hanging out with orphans. He brings his experience in other cultures to his audience through his music, whether in the political awareness of 'Belgrade Station' or the African rhythms of 'Leaving the Night'.

Murray performs solo with acoustic and electric guitar or with a full band. An accomplished guitarist, he delivers song after masterfully crafted song with passion and power balanced by humorous, insightful talk between tunes.

Shortly after moving to Nashville from South Carolina, Murray met hit songwriter John Mallory, who soon became his mentor and collaborator. The two co-wrote the songs for his most recent record, Stutter, and recorded them with the help of some of Nashville's most creative musicians, including Ben Folds producer John Mark Painter and Hank III drummer Sean McWilliams.

Stutter charted at radio stations across the country and continues to receive regular airplay at hundreds of college and independent stations nationally and internationally.

Murray has visited stations across the US and in Central America to provide live on-air broadcasts. With another record in the works, he is gearing up for more touring and promotion. He currently lives in Minneapolis.

Lyrics

Long Way Down

Written By: Scott Moses Murray

Sometimes just to find yourself
You find that you must lose all else
Play the only hand you're dealt
No wildcards and no trades
And in the dark you ante up
With the last coin from your beggar's cup
And hope to God that hope's enough
To see you through till day

It's a long way down
A long way down
To where the light of heaven shines

Sometimes you stab yourself in the back
Throw your own train off the track
Refuse to give grace any slack
In this short tightrope of years
But when you bare your self-inflicted welts
To the light of day and the warm air melts
Well they trickle out in tears

It's a long way down
A long way down
To where the light of heaven shines

Sometimes I dream that I've crossed the sea
To an island that was made for me
To give away to you for free
Let your flag unfurl
And when I dig deep inside
Break the lock and open wide
This empty chest, there I find
Enough wealth for all the world

It's a long way down
A long way down
To where the light of heaven shines

Sometimes you feel you've lost yourself
Trying to love someone else
Gave away your coat, your belt,
Your shoes and your soul
Till you're standing naked in the dark
And a light shimmers in your empty heart
And the love that made you fall apart
Starts to make you whole

It's a long way down
A long way down
To where the light of heaven shines

Love for the Sake of Love

Written By: Scott Moses Murray, John Mallory

Freedom is the strangest thing
To call the death of love
Free to try one more time
As if one more time’s enough
Free to roam the wilderness
Searching for myself
And pray that when I find it
I will be somebody else

I’m alone in this place that together we made
And I’m wondering what it means
Does it have any truth if it doesn’t have you
Or is there truth enough
In love for the sake of love?

Bitterness, Despair, Desire—
Are these my only friends?
I feel like Job in his ashes
Waiting for their lectures to end
You’d be flattered if you heard the way that they converse
Telling me that you’re the center of the universe

I’m alone in this place that together we made
And I’m wondering what it means
Does it have any truth if it doesn’t have you
Or is there truth enough
In love for the sake of love?

Gun To Your Head

Written By: Scott Moses Murray, John Mallory

Gun to your head
Gun to your head
What's the name of the man who held the gun to your head?
Just one question after all that's been said
What's the name of the man who held the gun to your head?

It was all your mother's fault
Those bedtime books she read
Now all those crazy fantasies
Are stuck up in your head
You're floating through the clouds again
Drifting like the dead
Knowing what you want
And doing something else instead

With a gun to your head
Gun to your head
What's the name of the man who held the gun to your head?
It was out of your hands
You were forcibly led
What's the name of the man who held the gun to your head

You can blame it on the government
You can blame it on the man
You can say it was religion
That messed you up so bad
One thing you can count on
Whomever you accuse
You’ll marry Mrs Habit
If you lie with Ms Excuse

Gun to your head...

If you're gonna make these choices
You're gonna take it on the chin
You cannot duck the reasons
For the state that you are in

Gun to your head, Gun to your head
What's the name of the man who held the gun to your head?
Just one question after all that's been said
What's the name of the man who held the gun to your head?
