"The Antidote"

If he isn't on your radio, he should be. If you haven't heard his music, you will. Scott Murray is a wonderful antidote to the bling bling power punk boy band drivel being fed into your musical diet. Go back for several helpings on this one. - Robyne Robinson, Fox 9 Minneapolis

"Made me want to spend Thanksgiving differently"

With so few constants to rely on when making a music selection to review for Demorama, you have to come up with your own criteria. Some people choose based on the craziest name, others close their eyes and pick by touch. As for me, I go for albums with overly altered graphics on the cover. By following a private rule, I let the music inside be the wild card. Just because something looks slick (or doesn’t) does not mean the music will match. Scott Murray’s Stutter made into my lap because of the turquoise-and-gold-washed flowerscape on the cover of his album. Inside, I found eloquent, sensitive, searching songs fed by Scott’s experiences traveling the world building schools and hospitals. With such a background, it is not surprising many of his 10 songs deal with the frustration of encountering people (probably fellow Americans) whining because they don’t feel they can do what they want to, such as “Gun to Your Head.” “What’s the name of the man who held the gun to your head?/ Was it out of your hands, were you forcibly led?” Gads, it makes me want to shut up and spend my Thanksgiving differently. And, how often do we in the United States get to listen to music inspired by a train ride through Belgrade? We forget so quickly that there’s a whole world out there, and Scott gently reminds the listener that our country has had a hand in creating a lot of the world’s turmoil. Also, Scott’s exploration of spirituality comes through in his songs, and not only in the ones where he makes direct references to God. His love songs, too, left me wondering if they were odes to a mortal or the divine. The melodies were traditional quiet rock in nature and sometimes incorporated African beats as well as penny whistles and electric guitars. They excited me. I didn’t notice when I’d hit the repeat button. I didn't expect to find what I did within Scott's album, and I certainly didn't expect to have it change the way I thought about myself and my place in this world. - Vanessa Moore, Demorama

"Extremely Highly Recommended"

Outstanding debut! Song after well-crafted song and melody after infectious melody should be more than just casually appealing to the majority of Not Lamers out there! Will appeal to fans of Matthew Sweet, Doug Powell, Pat Buchanan (Idle Jets), Michael Penn, Freedy Johnston and Jules Shear. Produced by Ben Folds producer John Mark Painter (who has a lot of Brad Jones flourishes), Scott Murray knows what he’s doing. Extremely Highly Recommended! - Bruce Brodeen, www.NotLame.com

Bio

Honest and intelligent, the acoustic-driven pop-rock of Scott Moses Murray takes a fresh, imaginative look at the human condition.

Murray has worked as a volunteer in Africa, South America, Eastern Europe and the jungles of Papua New Guinea building a school, a hospital, a bridge or simply hanging out with orphans. He brings his experience in other cultures to his audience through his music, whether in the political awareness of 'Belgrade Station' or the African rhythms of 'Leaving the Night'.

Murray performs solo with acoustic and electric guitar or with a full band. An accomplished guitarist, he delivers song after masterfully crafted song with passion and power balanced by humorous, insightful talk between tunes.

Shortly after moving to Nashville from South Carolina, Murray met hit songwriter John Mallory, who soon became his mentor and collaborator. The two co-wrote the songs for his most recent record, Stutter, and recorded them with the help of some of Nashville's most creative musicians, including Ben Folds producer John Mark Painter and Hank III drummer Sean McWilliams.

Stutter charted at radio stations across the country and continues to receive regular airplay at hundreds of college and independent stations nationally and internationally.

Murray has visited stations across the US and in Central America to provide live on-air broadcasts. With another record in the works, he is gearing up for more touring and promotion. He currently lives in Minneapolis.
