"Landing somewhere between the urban folk of Harry Chapin, Elton John's poppy rock, and occasionally hinting at Bruce Hornsby's slick bayou funkiness, Stein's fearlessness is admirable... a knockout pianist." - Brian Lisik (Akron songwriter/rock journalist)

Scott Stein cannot remember a time that he did not have music in his life. His earliest childhood memories include hearing the sounds of West Side Story or Beethoven's Emperor Concerto through his parents' record player or the religious melodies of the synagogue sung by his father, a professional Cantor.

Not long after taking up the piano at age 4, Scott began writing songs. Eventually it was pop music that grabbed hold of his muse, though it would be enhanced by years of playing in jazz groups and a degree in classical composition.

Stein likes to wind his way through eclectic and sometimes far-reaching influences, but always comes back to the idea that a good melody is undeniable. By grabbing sometimes very specific things from the artists who inspire him, Scott has begun to forge his own path. While the melodies of classic pop craftsmen like Burt Bacharach, Carole King, Paul McCartney and even Rodgers and Hart have provided a lilting template for his writing, he has also found himself drawn toward those artists whose lyrics gave the listener a sense of the artists himself - from Bob Dylan to John Hiatt's warm wit, to Paul Westerberg's cynical/poetic ethos.

To write a song that is timeless is every writer's personal goal; to write a song that is timeless and also unflinchingly contemporary is something that goes beyond mere words and notes. Scott Stein, in all humility, is striving for just that.
