"Scout Smith & Steve MacCarthy"

Scout Smith & Steve MacCarthy
By Josh Fryfogle
Scout Smith is a name that many will already recognize. At the surprising age of 17, this young lady is already well into carving her niche in the local music scene.
Last year I attended a performance from Scout at a local benefit event, and she certainly carried her own; she was sixteen then. She shared the stage that day with harmonica player Steve MacCarthy, and they made a really impressive showing of Scout’s original songs. The crowd loved it, so when MacCarthy contacted me about doing a possible interview I didn’t hesitate.
I met the duo at a local coffee shop in Wasilla, Metro Caf?, where we found a late lunch crowd enjoying conversation and a brief glimpse of sunshine coming through the windows. Scout and Steve performed two songs, one of which was only written the night before.

Bio

Known as “Alaska’s Rising Star,” Scout is a standout female performer in the Alaskan music scene. Scout was born and raised in Anchorage, where she began exploring her love of music and fascination with words early; singing, writing, and recording her early songs before she left elementary school. Her guitar-furnished songwriting blends creative lyrics with passionate melodies. She is also a stunningly beautiful young woman who has developed a mature and exceptional stage presence, well beyond her eighteen years. With her powerful voice, rich vibrato, and driving guitar, she is a popular artist, playing in over thirty venues throughout South-Central Alaska and Washington.

Following the release of three early CDs: “The Mockingbird Sings,” “Wherever You Might Be,” and “Foolish Me,” made as a very young singer/songwriter, Scout released “Show Me” in 2009, a blend of her own country, pop, and rock-influenced music. This more professionally produced CD features the talents of several notable regional musicians, and has sold well at gigs, on iTunes, Pandora, and has received routine local airplay. Her 2010 EP, “Warm”, has also been a brisk seller and incorporates more pop elements than previous releases. In a recent interview, Make A Scene Alaska said, “At the surprising age of 17, this young lady is well into carving her niche in the local music scene” (July 2010). Scout loves the recording studio, but “Playing my music live is a deeper to me than simply having it recorded. In person, I strive to connect my music through myself to every person in the audience; that’s what I give to it, everything I have to give.”

Talented young guitarist, David Myhre, has joined with Scout for some great live performances and they are now booking together.
