"Stranger Creek String Band performs at Basehor Dairy Days festival"

"Paul Wilburn (orchestra teacher at BLHS), Doug Rippee, Doug Doering and Barry Brown of The Stranger Creek String Band were a hit at the Basehor Dairy Days celebration. Many guests at Saturday’s event caught some old-fashioned bluegrass while munching on buffalo burgers cooked by Basehor Lions Club members or hotdogs and snow cones prepared by members of Bob Wiley Memorial VFW Post 11499."

Bio

While it’s nothing new for a band to use the string band format as a base for exploring musical territory, SCSB blurs the lines between their different musical influences to create a unique sound that feels very familiar, and brings a laid-back groove coupled with the overtones of a bluegrass tune.

SCSB’s music cannot be neatly categorized into a particular musical genre, and draws its spirit from the deep well of American music, with street jazz, blues, swing, bluegrass, jug band & old time music, and folk influences within the broad context of a string band. Like many of today's acoustic/string bands, they have modern and traditional influences that confuse the musical boundaries.

Regardless of the genre, this group of musicians enjoys playing music, and presents the music as if they were on your front porch. It is clearly evident that they enjoy playing music together, and this makes the music more enjoyable for those listening. SCSB’s music is comfortable and exciting for listeners, with strong instrumentations, and offers something new and interesting at every turn. This approach makes their music popular with all age groups.

SCSB’s live shows consist of original material, bluegrass & jazz standards, as well as less-known songs rescued from obscurity. Their interpretation of songs makes no attempt to duplicate older material or twist them beyond recognition. They simply stir familiar material together in a way that makes each song original, and stylistically, their own.

In the last three years, they have performed at outdoor festivals in Kansas & Missouri, local coffee houses, fund raisers, music in the park events, farmers markets, art fairs, museum events, Oktoberfest event, & clubs in Kansas, Missouri and Arkansas.

SCSB has been influenced by a variety of musicians including: Boulder Acoustic Society; Crooked Still; David Grisman; Dan Hicks; Del McCoury Band; Django Rhinehart/Stephan Grapelli; The Greencards; Greg Brown; Hot Buttered Rum; Hot Club of Cowtown; Jerry Garcia; Jorma Kaukonen; Phillips, Greer, Flinner; Peter Rowan; Richard Thompson; Tim O’Brien; Tom Waits; and Bill Monroe & Robert Johnson.
