Aufgewachsen im kleinen Dorf Kommitjie vor den Toren Cape Towns, wo das Leben von den Wellen und den Gezeiten bestimmt ist, verarbeitet er in seinen leichten und doch tiefgründigen Songs die Lektionen, die er vom Leben am Cape gelernt hat.
Das wäre zum einen, dass das Glück immer in der eigenen Hand liegt. Zum anderen, dass man im Fall der Fälle nie alleine ist. Und genau diese Sicht auf die Dinge schwingt in den Songs von SEAN KOCH mit. Hand in Hand mit dem Optimismus und der Leichtigkeit, mit welcher der 26-Jährige das Leben angeht, entstand mit der ersten EP „Natural Projection“ ein Werk, das in nur fünf Songs das Potential hat, eine ganze Lebensgeschichte zu erzählen.

Dass aber das Surferleben an der Südspitze Afrikas in erster Linie von Sonne, Roadtrips und einer großen Portion Lebensfreude geprägt ist, wird in seiner ersten Single Good Times Keep Rolling deutlich. “Was happy to see people come out of hibernation and start making full use of the beauty that surrounds us again and making it clear that only YOU control your good times!", erzählt Sean mit seinem ansteckenden Lachen, wenn er nach der Botschaft seiner ersten Single gefragt wird.

Seine Liebe zur Musik entwickelte Sean bereits während seiner Schulzeit. Vom Aufstehen in der Früh bis zum späten Abend hörte er nahezu durchgehend Songs mit Texten die ihm als Inspiration für das Leben dienten. Nachdem erste Lieder, die er eigentlich nur für sich selbst geschrieben hatte, von seinen Freunden entdeckt und gehört wurden, ließ Sean sich dazu motivieren, seine Musik in die Welt zu tragen.
Die meisten seiner aktuellen Lieder entstanden während der meist einsamen Arbeit auf Bohrinseln vor der Westküste Afrikas. In dieser Atmosphäre entstand letztlich der Entschluss sich ganz auf die Musik zu konzentrieren. Sean erkannte seine Bestimmung und nahm sein Glück fortan selbst in die Hand. Inspiriert von der Musik ihrer Vorbilder Ben Howard, Xavier Rudd, Angust Stone und Milky Chance arbeitet das Trio stetig daran, ihrer mitreißenden Musik noch mehr Tiefe und Abwechslung zu verleihen.

Deutlich wird dies vor allem bei ihren Live-Auftritten, bei denen sie ihre bekannten Hits stetig variieren und ihr Publikum so auf kreative Art und Weise zu überraschen wissen. Ihre Shows in Cape Town sind bereits regelmäßig ausverkauft. Doch auch der Rest des Landes kam im letzten Jahr bereits in den Genuss ihrer Livemusik, als das Sean Koch Trio als Support mit den auch in Europa bereits bekannten Jeremy Loops sowie Matthew Mole durch Südafrika tourten.

Im Jahr 2016 steht für die talentierten Künstler nun selbst der Sprung nach Europa an. Mit den ersten Konzerten im Frühsommer warten auf die deutschen Fans des sommerlichen Modern Folks echte Highlights für den Auftakt der aufregendsten Zeit des Jahres. - Simon from surfersmag.de

Bio

Sean is a young, talented musician and songwriter, born in Kommetjie, Cape Town. His music is a fusion of alternative folk, naturally blended into a foot- tapping, fun-loving country surf style. Playing the djembe from an early age taught him the rhythm and beat which subtly speaks through his smooth guitar riffs and softly sung lyrics and it is this fresh and individual sound which has garnered him a rapid breakthrough into the incredibly rich and diverse CT music scene.

How did the band start?

The band started when Ross(drummer and D.O.P) introduced my old recordings to Shaun (Bassist and producer) who liked the sound. We met up for a beer at our local watering-hole and decided to start this project together and record an EP named, ‘Natural Projection’ which was the name of the first song I ever wrote.

I (Shaun Cloete) had never heard anything like Sean’s songs in my entire life. I quit my corporate job a month before we went into production of Natural Projection and have never looked back.

Tell us a bit more about what makes you guys tick as a band?

What’s really important to us is playing shows and spreading a positive message. Watching people connect with the music is also really important as there is meaning behind every song which I think many people could relate to. Also just seeing how things are changing for us for the better inspires us to get more creative and work on our act.

What are everyone’s roles? I.e. who is the hipster, the jester, the trouble-maker, etc.

What has been the biggest highlight of your career this far?

We are currently experiencing our biggest highlight. Traveling Germany and Holland in our tour van with our hero of a manager Leila, playing shows to the warmest, friendliest people north of the equator. The people themselves have been a massive highlight they have been nothing but accommodating and kind towards us.

We saw that you have a European tour coming up, that’s super exciting! How did it come about?

Its one of those awesome right place at the right time kind of moments, Leila Benameur of Benameur- Promotion was traveling Namibia and South Africa at the exact time of our EP launch. A bit of fortune and a few months later here we sit typing this interview from our tour van while en route to the Surf and Skate festival in Hamburg, Germany!

Who has been your most profound international musical inspiration?

Xavier Rudd, Angus and Julia Stone and Ben Howard

And who has been your biggest local musical influence?

Jeremy Loops for sure. We got a lot of respect and admiration for how Jem has structured his career. Alice Phoebe Lou is another sister that we have immense respect for.

What do you think about the SA music scene right now & where do you see it going?

Right now the local scene is as interesting and exciting as its ever been. Its become realistic for a local act to have a little EP launch at The Waiting Room and then find themselves touring Europe 3 months later. The South African creative scene as a whole , is on the map in a big way.

What do you think about your music?

Our music might not be very technical or complicated but it comes from a very inspired place in our hearts. Less is more kind of approach.

All bands have road trips, tell us about your most epic one?

It’s the one we are currently on. We are at a complete stand still on the highway as we type this. There are these hysterically funny German guys behind us that are celebrating their best mates bachelor party. They have cracked open a bunch of drinks and are playing soccer on the highway. We are going to go join them, brb…:

Have you got any gigs where we can catch you once you get back from Europe?

Following the anticipatory release of the teaser tracks, ‘Flow’ and ‘Good Times Keep Rolling’ several months ago, Kommetjie-hailing musician Sean Koch drops his debut album, “Natural Projection”, today.

Steeped in the characteristic alternative surf culture sound Kommetjie is simply brimming with, the project is a collection of warm, organic tracks well laced with upbeat, rhythmic techniques. Featuring collaborative tracks with the likes of Yannick Bathfield and Josh Riley (Grassy Spark), Tessa Johnson (Al Bairre and Touchwood), Anya Zinn (Birthday Girl), Jess van der Merwer (piano and saxophone), Ross Hiller (percussion) and Shaun Cloete (Los Tacos) the fleeting, five-track EP boasts infectious rhythms which stick in your fingers long after the last grooving note has died away.

Opening with the bouncing, Jack Johnson-esque offering of ‘Flow’, the project launches straight into the sound which seems to perfectly epitomise Koch’s style. Skilled, deftly crafted acoustic guitar progressions are overlain by grooving baselines and heady rhythm to create a bouncy, vaguely island-style sound.

This is swiftly followed by ‘Good Times Keep Rolling’, which in turn appears to optimise Koch’s ideals as a musician and positive outlook on life. While incorporating a similar surf style sound, there are stark traditional African influences generously stirred in. Veering towards the sort of reinvented traditional sound most often employed by Hot Water, this feel good song, albeit a tad monotonous, is simply rolling in positive vibrations.

‘Lift You Up’ delivers a far more delicate, chiming sound courtesy of Koch’s expert guitar work. As seems to be his wont, the track gradually gains momentum as it proceeds, finding and building upon the initial fragility of the sound to produce a somewhat bare, yet wholly effective rhythm.

The penultimate track, ‘Rock Bottom Avenue’ virtually speaks for itself in terms of subject. While the track leans heavily on repetition, delicate piano injections coupled with a brief burst of energy found at the core of the song save it from slipping into an all too familiar musical trap.

The closing track, ‘Welcome to the Light’, however, brings a whole new set of cards to the table, with haunting cello and guitar which result perplexingly in incredibly vivid soundscapes. Liquid music notes intermittently blend and divide giving the song a curiously expansive quality, and the impression of alternately conjoining musical landscapes, carefully overlain by Koch’s characteristic style. With an impressive array of musical skills beneath his belt, along with his blatantly unique voice, Sean Koch is a musician to keep a sharp eye on. - SKYE MALLAC
