"Sean Foster and The Vaqueros: a band that will move you."

Honest is the word that Sean Foster chose when I asked him what word best describes his music. The talented songwriter could not have chosen a more appropriate adjective to describe his deep and beautiful sound.

Music has always been a part of Sean's life. His dad gave him his first guitar when he was just a kid; and throughout his youth he played in a Rock Band for 9 years. He moved to Montreal from Edmonton in the Fall of 2009. Upon his arrival, he was warmly welcome by the local music scene and quickly formed meaningful relationships with different musicians and artists. He quickly made a name for himself and started playing shows all across the city. His biggest show so far was at the National last year, when Chinatown asked him to open for them on the night of their album launch.

For Foster story telling is the best way with which he can best express himself. With song titles from 'Mary go Round' to 'Hollow Woods' he has the ability to write about the happiest times and the sad ones too. In person, Foster speaks with passion of his love for music, he describes it as being at the core of his existence, and surely that passion is well reflected in his lyrics and melodies.

Q) What inspired you to write your own lyrics?
A) I am always writing about life and for me writing my own lyrics just came naturally.

Q) What are your sources of inspiration?
A) Life in general; the highs and lows of life.

Q) What has been your biggest challenge?
A) Last year, I opened for Chinatown at the National for their album launch, that was a pretty great challenge.

Q) How did you form Sean Foster and The Vaqueros?
A) The band was formed in a very organic way in November 2011. I met both Brian Smith and George Donoso III when I moved here. Having already been influenced by the Cuban music scene; I was inspired to create a sound with similar fusions and mixtures. When Brian told me he played the Spanish box I knew I had found a great new addition to the band; and I always knew I wanted to collaborate with George.

Q) What's next for Sean Foster and The Vaqueros?
A) We're launching our first album in next year...which is really existing as it will be the result of all our work as a band. In April, we're releasing a 7"; our first two singles will be 'Merry go Round' and 'Hollow woods'.

Make sure to catch Sean Foster and The Vaqueros on January 25th at Casa Del Popolo. - Midnight Poutine

Bio

Sean Foster, an indie folk singer based in Montreal, Quebec, plays a stripped-down style of folk rock on acoustic guitar.

Foster was born and raised in the prairie city of Edmonton, Alberta. He had an early start in music, singing in various punk rock outfits in the city’s local scene. In 2001, while living in Vancouver, he was inspired by Love album Forever Changes and moved back to Edmonton to form indie rock group 7and7is. The group toured North America’s West Coast extensively, releasing a full-length album, Spoils of the Empire, and an EP Smashed To Pieces (In The Still Of The Night).

In December 2007, 7and7is became the first foreign rock band to tour Cuba. The band’s experiences were immortalized in the feature-length documentary Una Vez Por La Vida. In 2009, 7and7is parted ways to pursue individual interests. Foster’s interest in Cuba continues with his involvement in Solidarity Rock, a not-for-profit organization that supports Cuban musicians through donations, events, tours and bringing much-needed musical and video equipment into Cuba.

By the summer of 2009, when 7and7is parted ways, Foster had already started playing solo shows. He soon made the move east to Montreal, taking his vast repertoire of songs with him. There, he performed alone with an acoustic guitar, opening for many bands such as Black Diamond Bay and For Those About to Love. He was soon approached by local musicians George Donoso III (Sam Roberts, The Dears, Melissa auf der Maur) and Brian Smith about taking on a backing band. Now, with Donoso on electric guitar and Smith on the cajón, they often perform as Sean Foster and the Vaqueros.

Sean Foster & the Vaqueros toured the island of Cuba in March 2014 and are planning to screen a short documentary of the tour in September. The band  released a 2 song 7" vinyl and 4 song EP on May 1st 2013 and are planning the release of a full length album in the fall of 2014.
