Bio

Sean Stout is a singer-songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, and energetic performer from the small town of Beaverton, Michigan. Sean began playing guitar at the age of 11 and soon after began playing percussion, bass, and other stringed instruments, and singing. His sound is as if Elvis Costello and Jimi Hendrix started a band and decided to write very electric songs about American history mixed with personal experience. Sean prefers this electric sound because, simply, his favorite guitar is an electric model, but he does have many acoustic recordings as well.

"Sean Stout's blues rock fusion brings an original flavor to a music scene that is all too often vanilla. His passion for music is a great asset to his performances, and the energy he brings to the stage is contagious." - James Slider, President Moore Media Records

Sean's first major musical endeavor was with his band, Time Travel Crew, in which he began writing original songs. His multi-instrumental talents can be heard on his first two solo albums, the minimalist, lo-fi "Lockjaw" (2005) and the eclectic "Mania" (2008), on which he plays all the instruments, including, guitar, bass, drums, mandolin, banjo, and piano.

Sean's third album, "Cures All", (whose title is meant to be a final chapter in the series of his albums titled with medical afflictions) was released in May of 2011. Its sound continues in the electic traditions of his earlier work, but is the first of his solo albums to include a full, live band, which is anchored by drummer Nathan Brandt and bassist Curt Stout, Sean's own father. The album also hones in on Sean's heavy blues influences, as witnessed on the tracks "Inkster" and "Clarafied", which channel guitarists Buddy Guy and Elmore James, and his interest in jazz shows on tracks like "Hymn For Tim"- a spooky jazz-fusion piece.

"In the times of Gaga dance hits and acoustic cookie cutter heartbreak anthems, Sean Stout creates blues-infused sounds that are at times reminiscent of Bowie or Beefheart. His comedic stage presence easily creates a bond with his audiences, making his performance a favorite week-after-week. " - Ryan Heisler, Open Mic Night at Kaya Coffee House.

Sean's fourth album, "Boyhead", (returning to the ailment series of titles) harkens back to the acoustic sound of his first album, "Lockjaw", but with a more "hi-fi" sound. Most of the album was recorded on the 100+ year-old acoustic guitar Sean discovered at an antique festival. The album furthers the writer's interest in singing songs from diverse characters' perspectives.

Even among all his diverse influences, the sounds of 1950s and '60s pop and early Rock & Roll are likely his greatest influence, as all his songs share a strong sense of melody. Currently, Sean plays either solo (electric or acoustic guitar and vocals) or with his trio of himself on guitar and vocals, Brandt on drums, and the elder Stout on bass. Sean also plays bass in the Midland, Michigan heavy melodic rock band Archana and is always up for trying new musical projects. He hopes to develop tours, continue recording; focusing on concept albums about many topics in American history and society, and spread his music to all ears that will listen.
