"Seapony: "Late Summer""

Initially, we thought Seapony were mocking us by calling their eyelash-fluttering, rosy-cheeked new track “Late Summer” while an unprecedented blizzard howls away outside our window. But we eventually sided with the more reasonable explanation that it was written during warmer times, which is when we first chanced upon Dreaming. The Seattle trio continue to keep it real with this blue-jeaned, sumptuous, and sultry little dose of paddling-pool pop, on the flipside of their now sold-out debut 7” through Double Denim. "The Daily Choice: Seapony - Dreaming"

If you didn’t think Seattle’s very own Seapony’s new song “Dreaming” wasn’t tinged with just a taste of 80s low-key romance rock, the new video by Anabel Navarro will surely tip the scales in that direction. The fuzzy, VHS quality clips of a dancer seemingly plucked from 1989, or the layer of fog machine smoke that wisps across the screen, even the shiny black comforter in which our protagonist rolls about in the beginning - this could’ve been plucked from any number of sagging home video VHS shelves.

With that said, Seapony and their blurred line of romance and rock, are growing on me more and more and more. It’s sweet music, but not blindingly cute, not teeth-rotting, just genuine and wrought with emotion. - Sound on the Sound

"Seapony "Dreaming""

The band's named Seapony, the song's called "Dreaming", the single's cover art is a picture of a girl in ocean water, and the label that's putting it out doubles as a Tumblr blog. All initial sings point to the kind of hazy electro-pop we've heard so much of these last couple of years, yet when you actually press "play" on this Seattle indie rock trio's new single, you get something quite different and ultimately much more direct. This breezy, guitar-driven gem is compact and tuneful, getting by more on clear and simple statements than fuzzy allusions. If anything, you might compare it to Best Coast; "Dreaming" bears a slight melodic resemblance to "Something in the Way", and the lyrics seem to hint at a similar heartache ("I don't really feel like everybody else/ I don't want to be stuck on the bottom shelf"). There's a bit of lo-fi fuzz that surrounds the tune, but not so much that it obscures "Dreaming"'s earworm-worthy riff, which are always welcome when they pop up in sweet little songs like this. - Pitchfork

"Featured Artist: Seapony"

Sometimes we hear a new band and can’t wait to write about them. Such is the case with Seapony, a Seattle-based threesome that’s all about old fashioned, guitar driven pop, with lyrics about summer, dreaming, love – all the good stuff. And this crew works fast: despite only forming in June, the band just released a self-titled 3 song EP that you can stream on their website. We hope you love it as much as we do. - Roxy Blog

When we posted Seapony's "Dreaming" the other day, we mentioned that the Seattle indie rockers' debut 7" was coming out on November 15 via Double Denim. You can listen to the whole release now over at the band's Bandcamp; here's another track for you to check out in the meantime.

"Catching Up: Seapony"

Catching Up: Seapony

November 6, 2010 in Culture, mp3, music | Tags: mp3, music, seapony | by fiercetalk

These past two weeks my attention has been placed elsewhere, my mind totally devoted to a new job. My brain hasn’t been able to break away from that, not even to soak up and share the sounds of musical therapy. But it’s Saturday and i just heard Seapony.

Seapony hails from Seattle, no doubt a place that sits in the collective memory banks of all those who don’t live there. When I think of Seattle I think of three things: grunge, Starbucks and rain. I’d bet that’s what many, many people think of. But when you live in that place, when you experience it every day, you confuse the collective minds of those outside. So Seapony, they make music that doesn’t sound like rain, grunge or corporate coffee.

There’s some hazy reverb a la Real Estate in these songs, which is likely what attracts me. There’s also some girl group jangly jams a la Vivian Girls (but prettier). But what these few Seapony songs have is the catch of the day melody thing that is missing from a lot of music. I don’t want to say easy listening, but this is easy to listen to. And sometimes that’s just what you need. - Microphone Memory Emotion

"Seapony - Seapony EP"

Seapony is a moniker that instantly brings back memories of a forgotten childhood, or lazy summers by the beach.

The Seattle twee-pop three-piece, yearn for warm-hearted nostalgia and lost dreams. Female vocals and jangly guitars breeze through three short slices of power-pop, that can be filled next to this year’s indie darlings, Best Coast and the Dum Dum Girls. - Chybucca Sounds

"Seapony"

Here's a new pop band from Seattle. When I say new, I mean they formed this June and put some songs on their Bandcamp in August. It makes me wonder what these guys were up to before they started the band because they have a well put together sound for only releasing one ep. If you're a blogger doing a pop night, then you'll have some new songs to add to your rotation with this band.

- Indie Today

"Seapony"

It may not be perfect weather for a picnic anymore, but if you like recreating picnics in your bedroom with your friends, then you need a soundtrack, right? RIGHT ON! Well get yourself some Seapony tracks for free off the amazing internet. They are well worth it. The vocal delivery is soft and romantic, the songs roll along at a peaceful pace, it's all quite lovely. So unless your picnics are mini heavy metal festivals, the gentle hum of Seapony's guitar/drums/vocals/simples songs will set the mood for some chillwave feelings all around. Music should make you feel something, the music coming atcha from Seapony will make you feel good, girlfriend!!!! - Champ

"Seapony:: Dreaming/Late Summer"

Lo-fi retro dream-pop from Seattle’s Seapony… latest track ‘Dreaming’ is all set to feature as the lead single on the group’s debut vinyl release next month. Featuring two brand new previously unavailable tracks, ‘Late Summer‘ and ‘So Low‘, and with 150 copies rumoured to have been pressed on clear sea-foamy vinyl, I’m pretty sure you’re gonna wanna run off and grab a copy of this as soon as you can. Highly recommended. - Beach Tapes

"Seapony - Dreaming"

New 7" from the excellent label that brought you the Blackbird / Paopao 7" single earlier this summer. Seapony are from Seattle but like a lot of US bands at the mo, seem to have taken lead from shiny, scatty 80s/90s British pop sound - there's a bit of Altered Images, Lush, The Primitives and The Vaselines in here. The girl's got a very cute voice and the simple guitar strokes will appeal to anybody that loved the amazing Wild Nothings album from earlier this year, one of the LPS of 2010 for sure. Looking forward to hearing more of this lot. - Pure Groove

"MP3 Seapony s/t EP"

Seapony’s blend of dreamy 50’s and 60’s inspired pop has a sunny naive vibe reminicing of something Phil Spector might have produced. Download their self titled ep below. - Sick of the Radio

"Seapony - "Dreaming""

Seapony emerged onto the music scene just a couple months ago, and have just as quickly proven to the blogosphere that they’re actually worth remembering. With its nostalgic girl-pop-surf sound, it’s kind of hard not to enjoy their latest single “Dreaming”, the title track off their new 3-track 7? set to release on Novermber 15th. Swing by the Double Denim Records website to pre-order your copy of Seapony’s Dreaming 7? now, as it is limited to only 300 copies worldwide. - New Dust

"Seapony - "Dreaming" 7""

The lazy-days beach-pop genre is a crowded one these days, with bands few-and-far-between like The Best Coast, Wavves, Beach Fossils, etc, setting themselves apart from the pack. After hearing only their first two songs, I’m pretty sure that Seattle’s Seapony have what it takes to hang with any of the aforementioned. The catchiness of both the lead single, “Dreaming”, and the b-side (which can be heard here) grabs you by the throat and dares you not to like it. This will make even the blackest of the black smile a bit, check it out. The 7? is limited to 300 copies and costs £5 at the Double Denim Shop. - OMG Vinyl

"Seapony - "Dreaming""

Seapony is a cute girl-boy-boy three-piece hailing from Seattle, WA. “Dreaming,” off their first release, is a deathly catchy pop track shouting fun guitar licks and nice girl vocals, feeling like a big wind blast of the salty ocean on your face and through your hair. This is also the second release ever for UK’s Double Denim Records. Preorder the 7? right here, and be quick about it cause the first 150 copies sold will be clear seafoam vinyl! - The Noise Is

"Seapony"

Of all the important aspects that go into making a band, one that is disproportionately focussed upon is the name they choose to call themselves. Whilst some might spend weeks agonising over their ideal moniker, most probably don’t think about it too much before spending the rest of their careers having to give the same reason to amateur journalists desperate to make up their full 30 minutes allocated interview time.

However, there are times when a name, whatever it’s origins, can say more about an act than even the most descriptive of adjectives could – something that is just about the case with Seapony. Daring to make a pun on a marine creature and using the blueprint laid earlier in the year by Best Coast, the Washington trio take grunge melodies and jazz it up with the slightly more well meaning elements of twee pop. It’s an interesting combination that just about works, mixing the speed and guile of their gritty garage predecessors with thick, sugary choruses and handclaps. Simple, to the point and effortlessly brilliant - quite like the name itself. We can only hope they don’t have to spend the next 5 years explaining what a Seapony is. - The Pigeon Post

"With You"

Aligned with this simple snare drum today, living the good life, courtesy of one Seapony from Seattle. "With You" has harmless pop presence. It's a cute throwback and it's pretty open about it. Destination is clear. - Stadiums and Shrines

"Seapony :: Dreaming"

Seattle’s Seapony make irresistible pop songs infused with little bursts of warm air and just the right amount of static. Their self-titled EP is available for free download here. You won’t want to miss out on this one. - The Road Goes Ever On

"Seapony - Dreaming"

This Seattle retro-pop outfit writes songs for late in the prom dance evening. Heartfelt notions of missing and growing and teenage love. Definitely go grab their excellent 4-song self-titled EP available free on their bandcamp. Looking forward to more from these kids! - Yvynl

"Seapony dreaming"

the second release from double denim is limited to just 300 copies and it's an absolute dream 7". seattle's seapony make irresistible pop songs infused with little bursts of warm air and just the right amount of static. lead track 'dreaming' is the perfect pop nugget that has the hooks of best coast the slackerisms of pavement and could have easily been a long lost sarah records single back in the day. - Rough Trade

"Believe in Summer"

Seattle's trio Seapony hit the interwebs with a blast this week via our ever-digging friends over at Double Denim, and seriously their heartbreaking and mind melting indie pop full of glory and innocence is the only thing we need to get the sun back into our lives. Make sure you don't miss their other three beautiful gems at their bandcamp. - No Fear of Pop

"Seapony - Seapony EP"

It’s Labor Day weekend and for most of us that means an extended weekend to get out and play, and breathe in a few more gulps of sweet summer air. Here’s a newly formed Seattle group called Seapony who will surely assist you in your summer extension efforts. Seapony falls into the airy twee-pop “if it ain’t broke don’t fix it” category for 2010. You can fetch their self-titled EP here for free. - Magic Teepee

"Seapony // Dreaming"

Double Denim Records has an early Christmas present in store for us this year, namely the release of their next 7”. This time Seapony from Seattle take centre stage with three tracks of carefree surf pop.

Innocent lyrics about lost love hover above the head noddingly good guitar riffs in Dreaming, which is the a-side. Stream So Low, one of the b-side tracks, over here.

You can already pre-order the Seapony 7” over at Double Denim’s Bigcartel. Its limited to 300 so get in quick. If you don’t already have the Blackbird Blackbird/Pao Pao split 7 then you can order them both together for a cool 7.50 pounds.
- Life: Aquatic

"Seapony - "Dreaming""

Fitting in so well with this Best Coast-y, 60's lo-fi surf music era we’re in right now, Seapony has a limited 7? release on the horizon that will satisfy that craving. The single ‘Dreaming’ is out on the 15th of November and available to pre-order now. - The OCMD

"Dreaming"

Seapony only started making their stunning brand of twee pop last June. What's more, it was less than two months ago that they threw their first collection of songs online (a three-track self-titled EP available here) and the rad homies at Double Denim Records have already snatched them up for a glorious 7" featuring three lovely new jams. - Get Off the Coast

"Seapony - Dreaming"

Sometimes the simplest things in life offer the most pleasure. Seapony are a new band from Seattle who offer up bittersweet nostalgia with a handful of songs that would be fitting for a snowed-in high school winter dance in the 50’s. The guitar riffs here are very much in line with those heard on Beach Fossils’ recent debut – simplistic surf pop with a melancholy interior. Their first ep is available for free at Bandcamp, while their new 7? “Dreaming” is available for pre-order via Double Denim. Preview “Dreaming” below. - The Sky Report

"Seapony // Dreaming 7""

After sifting through about a billion e-mails and separating the wheat from the chaff, it became apparent that one band in particular had risen past the doldrums of generic fuzz-rock and bedroom-pop tracks that clutter my inbox on a daily basis. Kind of surprising that in the gray and dreary city of Seattle a band like Seapony can churn out some of the most brightly tracks I’ve heard since Cults burst onto the scene a half year back (has it been that long?).

With a digital EP already under their belt, the trio is set to jump into the physical realm by releasing a three track 7” on the upstart (and label of the year candidate) Double Denim Records imprint. Opening with the infectious (and heavily publicized) track “Dreaming”, it takes almost no time to fall in love with the band. By the time you go through the Best Coast-tinged “So Low” and the all-to-appropriately titled track “Late Summer”, your instant enthusiasm has turned into a rabid obsession, making you unable to get enough of the band! - Part-Time Music

"Single Serving: Seapony – Double Denim 7?"

The same fine folks over at Double Denim who brought us the first physical Blackbird Blackbird release, are back promoting their second official release: a 7? single for Seapony. Seapony are a Seattle-based surf-pop trio that have recorded a beautiful collection of yearning, but sunny melodic lo-fi pop tunes that sway lazily to contented, breezy rhythms. Definitely recommended. Oh, and the EP is available as a free download on bandcamp. Double Denim will be releasing their debut 7? as of November 15, but it is limited to 300 copies – so pre-ordering is definitely advised. - Musical Pairings

"Seapony - "Dreaming""

I’m loving this jangly, sun-drenched new tune from Seattle’s Seapony. It’ll be on their upcoming, limited edition 7” along with a pair of b-sides, “So Low” and “Late Summer”. Double Denim Records has the honors. This release follows their free self-titled 3 song EP from earlier this year, which is still available at the band’s Bandcamp page. - Pop Headwound

"Introducing: Seapony"

Are you in the mood for some vintage sounding love pop? Maybe a nostalgic 60s surf/girl group hybrid that your parents probably may have dug the hell out of? Maybe this sounds tasty, but you want it in modern form? Well, Seapony have got you covered.

Seapony are a three piece from Seattle who are ready to capture your heart and hold on ever so tight. They write lovely pop songs that wouldn’t have gotten lost in the 50's/60's. They speak of lost love, and heartbreak. The songs aren’t sad though. They embrace the sadness, delivering tightly packed poppers that are going to leave you feeling euphoric to the bone.

They put up their debut EP on bandcamp, and are releasing a 7? for single “”Dreaming” with two new songs. The 7? is coming out on November 15th via Double Denim Records. It’s limited to 300 copies, and the first 150 will be on colour vinyl. Pre-Order it here.

Download the addictive guitar based jam “Dreaming” below. You will have in on repeat for a while. It’s a glorious thing. - We All Want Someone to Shout For

"Sightings: Seapony, "So Low""

Seattle’s Seapony make fuzzy, lo-fi pop songs. That’s nothing you haven’t heard a million times already, right? But Seapony somehow float to the top of the sea of feedback-drenched bandcamp pages. Songs like “So Low”, which will be featured on the band’s first ever physical release on Double Denim Records, showcase why. The track’s swirling feedback and catchy riffage cause you to bob your head along even as the slowly spoken vocals about the aftermath of a recent breakup might make you frown in agreement. Still, even while dragging “So Low” into my haphazardly put together breakup playlist I feel the undeniable urge to smile. I would love to use the old cliche, “They don’t make songs like this everyday.” But they do, everyday, just not nearly as well as Seapony does. - Visitation Rites

"Perfect popsongs from Seapony"

Seapony is a new project from Transmittens‘ Jen and Danny + Ian, and they make the loveliest pop-songs! The Seattle trio have just released their first EP for free on Bandcamp, and it features 4 really good songs. My favourites are the stunningly beautiful opener “Dreaming” and “I really do”, with its sweet vocals and twangy guitars. Seapony has the rough pop-power of bands like Dum Dum Girls, Veronica Falls or Best Coast, but they also remind me of old favourites like The Softies and Heavenly.

What a debut! I’m a fan! - Eardrums Music

"Imaginary Mixtape - September 2010"

All it should take is one listen to this song to get thineself over to Seapony's bandcamp page to download the entire four-song EP {posted/released late-August, 2010}. The brand new band consists of Jen and Danny from Transmittens and a talented fella named Ian. Rumor has it they may just be releasing a 7" in the near future. - Three Imaginary Girls

"Seapony: So Low"

Double Denim is excited to announce our second ever release, which will be a 7” for one of our recent favourites Seapony.

It was on our usual trawl through the murk of the internet that we found the dewy-eyed gold of ‘Dreaming’. It didn’t so much stand out from the crowd as leap right out of the computer screen. We loved the way the song straddled the gap between the surf of stuff like Best Coast and the slackerisms of Pavement, Yuck and countless others. It was a gap that we didn’t know needed filling but Seapony have done a fine job.

‘Dreaming’ will comprise the A-side and the B-sides are two new songs one of which is ‘So Low’ and you can stream its addictive stomp above. It’s another lonely propulsive jam carried by the force of crackling drums and a sugary guitar line.

The tracklisting is as follows:

Side A

1. Dreaming

Side B

2. So Low
3. Late Summer

The release will be limited to 300 and our stock is even less than that so if you don’t want to miss out then we advise pre-ordering. - Double Denim

"Seapony"

It seems that my music collection can't get enough of female vocalists right now, the latest addition being Seapony. Featuring dreamy echoing vocals drifting over Garage guitars & a pop drum beat squeezed into two minutes of delight, there's nothing not to love about this lot. - Neu Magazine

"Song of the Day: Seapony - Dreaming"

Every Monday through Friday, we deliver a different song as part our Song of the Day podcast subscription. This podcast features exclusive KEXP in-studio performances, unreleased songs, and recordings from independent artists that our DJs think you should hear. Each and every Friday we offer songs by local artists. Today’s featured selection, chosen by Afternoon Show Host Kevin Cole, is “Dreaming” by Seapony from their limited edition single available through Double Denim Records.
As our live broadcast of CMJ from the Ace Hotel wraps up, we offer up a song that will ease you gently out of your week and into the carefree days of the weekend. Seattle trio Seapony make sweet jangly surf pop that is a perfect balance of Best Coast, The Dum Dum Girls, and The Vaselines, with just enough Ventures thrown in for good measure. Today’s song “Dreaming” is catchy and mildly addicting and brings to mind a drive to the beach on a sunny day.

Recently Danny took a few minutes to share some more info about the project:

What was the inspiration for this project?

We wanted to fuse the sounds of bands like the Softies and the Field Mice with the surf style of the Ventures.

Jen & Danny, you were in another project (the Transmittens) before this group right? How did you guys connect with Ian?

Ian and I grew up in Oklahoma. We met while I was in college and we formed our first band there. After driving to Olympia to see Belle and Sebastian in 2001, Ian and some friends decided to move there. I stayed with them for a few months, but left to live in Cincinnati. There I joined a band that Jen played bass in. Jen and I moved to Kansas so that I could start my second round of college. This is where we started Transmittens. After I graduated Jen got a job offer in Seattle. Ian was living there and we started jamming together.

How did you get involved with Double Denim?

In late August we posted a four song EP for free download. We soon started seeing blog reviews popping up. Double Denim wrote a nice review of our EP and then e-mailed us asking if we wanted to release a single.

What’s your typical songwriting process, is there a primary songwriter or is it a pretty collaborative affair?

I come up with the basic song ideas. I play these for Jen who helps me to filter out the lame stuff. She does this through the ears of a listener, which is essential. Jen and I work out the lyrics and vocal melodies. We then get together with Ian to finish all of the guitar and bass parts.

Are your songs autobiographical or where do you draw your inspirations?

They are not autobiographical. For me writing lyrics is like putting a puzzle together. We just try to fit words together that are semi-cohesive, have the right number of syllables, rhyme, and don’t sound too cheesy.

What’s the story behind today’s song, “Dreaming?”

It’s about a person who would rather be dreaming than awake.

You can check Seapony out in person on Nov. 1st at The Sunset Tavern with No Joy and La Sera or live on KEXP on Nov. 20th. More dates and info at theirMyspace page. - KEXP

"Settling Dust"

Seattle’s Seapony sound like they could have been on a cassette the cops found locked away in Phil Spector’s vault when everything started going wrong. Luckily this is no time capsule band produced at gunpoint but its the simultaneously sunny and sad, jangle-pop romance bundled inside “Dreaming” which gives the track a foggy, warm-hearted and delicately scuffed nostalgia akin to the breezy, honeyed hits of bygone days.

Head on over to their Bandcamp to download the rest of their awesome EP jams. - Transparent

"The Buzz"

California isn't the only state on the west coast with beaches, as these Pacific northwesterners well know. Seapony offer a misty take on Best Coast's sun-dappled slackerdom on "Dreaming", their first release for Double Denim. The rain-slicked shores of the Puget Sound may not be paradise, but at least the chill waves are for real. - NME

Bio

Seapony is an American indie-pop trio that formed in Seattle in June of 2010.  The band's first four songs were posted to the band's bandcamp site on August 24th.  Numerous write-ups lead to the release of their first 7" single with London-based Double Denim Records, due out mid-November.  The band consists of Jen Weidl (rhythm guitar/vocals), Danny Rowland (lead guitar/drum machine), and Ian Brewer (bass).
Seapony have been described as sounding "...like they could have been on a cassette the cops found locked away in Phil Spector's vault when everything started going wrong" (Altered Zones) and writing "irresistible pop songs infused with little bursts of warm air and just the right amount of static" (The Road Goes Ever On).
Bloggers have painted the band as surfy, twee, airy, and retro.  Apparent influences on Seapony are Beat Happening, The Softies, and The Ventures.
