Section 4

Section 4

BandAlternativeRock

S4 is a chicago-based band with an amazing female vocalist (often compared to Portishead's Beth Gibbons) backed by dark, jazz-inspired rock. S4 is also compared to trip-hop acts like Massive Attack. S4 is the traditional guitar, bass, drums combination, with the unlikely addition of the vibraphone.

Biography

Chicago-based, Section 4, is a dynamics-driven band with a dark, lyrical sound. Like many other bands, they found classifying their music a challenge. Still, after repeated comparisons to groups such as Portishead and Massive Attack (and when given simultaneous "Native American" arm burns) they decided they might just be non-electronic trip-hop. Section 4 builds upon a wide variety of influences to create original sooty sounds, sometimes sensual, sometimes disturbing. Serena Romero's voice has been likened to Portishead singer, Beth Gibbons, countless times, though the music offers a much heavier sound. As always, they continue playing regularly in the Chicagoland area. Past venues include: The Double Door, The Note (RIP), Subterranean, The Elbo Room, Reggie's Rock Club, Goose Island, Wise Fool's Pub, Underground Lounge, Quenchers...etc. You can view our myspace account: www.myspace.com/section4band

Boogeyman

Written By: Serena Romero

keeping her tight so deep inside me
rocking her light figure so gently
if only she’d rest there quietly

wait
I hear her breathing
feels things so deeply
she’s so relentless
just hug her please
tell her I love her please
break it so gently please
that she can’t see me

she’s climbing out now

please hide her away
hide her away
don’t let her near me
she’s wondering now
please do not say
don’t let her stay
where she can hear me

not sure whose fight this girl is fighting
she could be right to stir me nightly
if only she’d rest there quietly

please hide her away
hide her away
don’t let her near me
she’s wondering now
please do not say
don’t let her stay
where she can hear m

Pretend

Written By: Serena Romero

walk in
walk in to all this drinking
and relax down next to me
order a drink
don’t say anything

let me pretend
that my life is something quiet
a moment in a movie
a movie that I like
walk in and drop your life

we can make believe
that we’re anything we’ll never be
rolls off the back of me
rolls off the back of me

walk up
walk up and give me your hand
and take space to side of me
offer a smoke
show me nothing

let me pretend
that my life is something quiet
a moment in a history
a history that haunts me
walk up and raise my life

we can make believe
that we’re anything we’ll never be
rolls off the back of me
rolls off the back of me

I’m too big to be so small
and it’s too hard to think I don’t run it
that the world expands
and then collapses in on everything

I’m too small to think at all
to think at all

Mean Guy

Written By: Serena Romero

He walked slowly through my dreams
nightly as I sleep

come out I don’t care
trust me I won’t scare now, Mr. Mean Guy
no longer wear my hair
how you’d recognize me
Mr. Mean Guy never did walk slowly

He walked slowly through my dreams
nightly as I sleep
he slowly nightly walked through my dreams
fighting as I sleep

laid out, body bare
tear me I won’t swear now, Mr. Mean Guy
no longer feel nor care
how you stole inside
Mr. Mean Guy never did walk slowly

He walked slowly ever sleepy ghostly
mostly as I stir and turn
praying he won’t notice me

changing namely the softness that betrayed me
praying that I learn to purge the brightness that he’d seen in me

he walked slowly

Long Walk Home

Written By: Serena Romero

when I say go, I go
but not alone
I never roam
mindlessly anymore
I sing the songs so I can bring the words
the words no one listens to
speak about fear
and hope and other things
bigger than small talk
smaller than in-betweens
and I pretend ears sit waiting patiently
to hear the messages
I alone can bring
and so as I walk alongside
my own thoughts
I pause to collect the images that I fought
for they are the simple truths
you never know your tone
until you’ve heard
the pulse that you bring that you sing
without words
and I cannot be the voice for more than me
cause I live suspiciously
in front of a crowd
I sing out loud, I dance
but in between songs
I slip into a trance
then I want to hide
tucked tightly in my voice
escaping the silence
into my warm noise
and so I imagine that I am someone else
who speaks to crowd as easily as to herself
and each time somehow I make it through

it’s a long walk home
and I haven’t seen a soul
just more and more snow under feet
spending too much time with me
but still so lonely
I feel so lonely
in the light
