"Simply Beautiful"

Live at SoYo Supporting The 1975

Fashioned with her what is soon to be trademark beehive and a 50s style dress, a shoeless See Emily Play swiftly starts the evening off. With all eyes set to the illuminated stage, Emily complete with her backing band quickly captures everyone’s attention. The dramatic sounds of songs such as Fair Game, to the big band styling of Let’s Go Get Away and the honest heartbreaking Memo astound those watching. Emily’s vocals flicker emotion complete with a cheeky glint in her eyes, it’s easy to see beyond the severity of some the deep and meaningful lyrics that everything is going be okay, as she sings in The Best Day ‘because I’m sitting here with you’, and she is, in fact, okay and we’re okay because what is before us is simply beautiful.

See Emily Play

Beautiful Songs from the Gorgeous North

September 1992 - Emily Ireland (aka See Emily Play) is born in that part of Sheffield where industry gives way to the rolling green hills of the Peak District. She starts playing live and writing music when just 13. Over the last seven years she has been honing her song writing and performance skills and building up a loyal home town following.

She is now ready to share her music with the world.

Emily’s piano style, soaring vocals and lyricism draw inspiration from artists as varied as; Nina Simone, Dylan Thomas, Pearl Jam, Syd Barrett, PJ Harvey and Ben Folds. Incorporating poetry, anger, passion and warmth in her vocal styling, Emily is fast becoming a major addition to the growing list of great Sheffield artists.

Emily has received plaudits in the UK and international press since releasing her debut EP, ‘Four Feet from the Door’ in early 2012 on Sheffield indie label, Tiny Teeth Records.

Sheffield’s own Glenn Gregory of Heaven 17 has described her as “a Kate Bush in waiting.”

Emily’s ‘standing room only’ performance at the Library Theatre, accompanied by the Sheffield Chamber orchestra and full band with brother Tom Ireland on lead guitar, was one of the highlights of the Tramlines Festival in July 2012.

Emily performs extensively both as a solo artist and with her band. December 2012 saw her London debut with gigs at Club Fandango, the Dublin Castle and the legendary Troubadour - the club which saw the birth of the careers of Sandy Denny, Adele and Ed Sheeran. She received a standing ovation and an immediate re-booking for gigs in February and March 2013. More London shows, festival gigs and a short tour of Italy are planned for the summer of 2013.

Emily has just released a follow up EP, simply called ‘See Emily Play’ on Tiny Teeth Records, and available on iTunes, Spotify and Amazon. Co-written and co-produced with younger brother Tom and with string arrangements by Matt Warren, See Emily Play has given us a collection of songs which stand up against the best of anything you will hear in 2013.

Tracks include* – the haunting ‘Fair Game’, the swinging ‘Let’s Go Get Away’, the beautiful ‘The Best Day’ and the epic ‘Memo’.
See Emily Play has been compared to Kate Bush, Carole King, Suzanne Vega and Tori Amos. See her live, buy her EPs and make up your own mind. We think you will agree that she is something special.
