Homegrown: South Florida bands
After going off to work on solo projects, Juan Pablo Nealon and Freddy Freund are finding success can be even sweeter the second time around.
The band mates reunited two years ago to form SeKond Nature. Being back on stage has been a blast.
"It's a lot better," Freund said. "We're more mature."
The former high school pals from Long Island were headed in different directions after the break up of their Manhattan-based band Graphic. But after arriving in South Florida separately, a year apart, Freund and Nealon found themselves living only a few miles from each other.
Since regrouping, the duo released the six-song EP Another Place in '06 and has kept busy playing their pop-driven rock at clubs from Delray Beach to Coconut Grove.
SeKond Nature is actually two bands. During the week, Nealon and Freund perform as an acoustic duo. The guys trade off on vocals and guitar. Nealon also plays keyboards. When the weekends kick in, SeKond Nature expands to a four-piece band. Drummer C.J. and bassist Albert Nigro were added this past summer.
Listeners have compared SeKond Nature to the Goo Goo Dolls, Matchbox 20, U2 and Counting Crows. "But we have more of a hard rock edge," said Freund, of Boca Raton.
Their music also has a bit of Latin influence. Lending a Spanish sound to their songs fits in well with the duo's multilingual, culturally diverse backgrounds. Nealon, a Margate resident, has roots in Argentina and speaks Spanish fluently. Freund's family is from France and is fluent in French.
Freund and Nealon perform regularly from 10 p.m.-2 a.m. on Wednesdays at Dicey Riley's, 217 SW Second St., Fort Lauderdale and during happy hours usually on the second and fourth Fridays of each month from 6-9 p.m. at Boston's on the Beach, 40 S. Ocean Blvd., Delray Beach.
The full band is booked at 11:30 tonight at Fat Cats, 320 SW Second St., Fort Lauderdale. Starting in July, the four-member group will also be returning to its regular slot on Saturday nights at Briny Irish Pub, 3440 E. Atlantic Blvd., Pompano Beach.

Bio
Sekond Nature's intense energy and musicianship will win over any crowd at any venue. The band is one of South Florida’s most entertaining and exciting cover bands playing 3-4 times weekly all over the east coast. With a fresh and unique list of over two hundred songs, covering every genre and style of music, a Sekond Nature show is one big party that everyone is invited to! With over 10 years’ experience touring, recording, and playing gigs from Vermont to Miami, Sekond Nature has entertained audiences on stages big and small. Always creating a personalized repertoire for each show, the band leaves every crowd hungry for more!
"This is the best line up we’ve ever had, and we’re in it for the long haul," says front man Juan Nealon. As a piano player and guitarist since age ten, Juan brings musical depth to the sound of Sekond Nature. Juan displays an incredible vocal range while covering material from Led Zepplin, to U2, to Bob Marley and beyond, and combines it with a persona that was born for the stage.
Playing the South Florida scene for the past four years, Sekond Nature has established themselves with a big following and name.
Laying down the solid, funk, blues influenced bass lines and rhythm comes James Meselsohn from New York, and Julian McFarlene from Boca Raton. James has had previous experience with two bands with major record deals and experience playing over exceeds him. Julian is a drum instructor by day, with over 40 of his own students. By night he helps establish the core solid foundation beat to the band, with pure high intensity.
Together, James and Julian clicked instantly in creating what every band needs- a solid and tight rhythm section. Lastly came Homer Gallardo. Arriving only a couple of years ago from Ecuador, he came to America solely to study the guitar, and it shows. Homers' ability and knowledge of the guitar truly adds the final missing piece; a stellar sound and impressive control of the instrument.
Together, these four have the experience, talent and know-how to rock any club, party, or special event. Look for Sekond Nature to be part of your entertainment plans! All you need to do is make it out to a show to see for for yourself.
