"Hollow Earth"

Hollow Earth finds tasteful hints of Bright Eyes and Wilco influence filtered through a raw, youthful naiveté. The opening title track bustles carefully with programmed beats very subtly scattered through an otherwise guitar-heavy atmosphere. It's somewhat dark, but not too grueling. There’s something rather promising about this EP. The flow amid each song is impeccable and the moods are mildly downtrodden in a very careful way. - PunkNews.org

Bio

Stop and Listen!

Selah.Selah came to be after the shocking dissolution of Missing Pilots in 2005; right at the end of their promotional tour in support of their well received self-titled EP.

All the while, Nick Curran (songwriter/singer/guitar) amassing a vast collection of home recordings under the name "Orwell". Being that there was more than a few "Orwell's" out there; the name was changed to "Selah.Selah". Selah is, for all intents and purposes, an un-translatable Hebrew word that symbolizes a pause or an end. One debated meaning is "Stop and listen!”.

Everything Has Endings (2003) was inspired by a devastating breakup; recorded and released while Nick lived in Pittsburgh. ‘Though I Want To’ and ‘Why Don’t You’ are flawless testaments of how broken spirits embrace what feels like a perpetual heartbreak.

The Once and Future (2005) is characterized by hope and longing. ‘Just As Well’ is a fan favorite, frequently requested during live shows. ‘You, Me and a Push-Pinned Globe’ is another favorite, always meeting expectations with its well-executed acoustic version.

Hollow Earth (2010) was released after a long hiatus due to a car accident. Nick experimented with different sounds and techniques inspired by his temporary physical limitations. Songs like ‘Earth Changes’, ‘A River Unfolded’ and ‘Sell It Off Your Chest’ are phenomenal examples of Nick’s musical growth- even under such dire circumstances.

Thought Forms (The Art of Losing Wars) (2012) was Nick’s way to hold onto sanity. ‘Lullaby No. 3 (Arrullo para Miranda)’ is a song Nick wrote for his first born while his wife was pregnant in 2010. It now is a devastating reminder of the hopes they shared, hopes that were crushed after they lost their daughter two weeks after birth. ‘Losing Wars’ is a raw and crushing rendition of a son being torn by the inevitable and having to cope with his mother’s pancreatic cancer diagnosis. ‘Quarantine Heart’ was inspired by Nick’s helplessness at not being able to ease his wife’s pain after losing their child.

Joined by Brad Topping (guitar, pedal steel- also from Missing Pilots), Dan Riddle (bass) and Josh Wood (drums), the music is a soundscape of circumstance. The words are a portrait of loss, love and redemption. Hopefully, for you, they shed light.
