Bio

“Musically speaking, I know what I want”. Beyond the obvious shyness, Selah Sue conveys a strength and a determination quite unlikely for a 21 years old young woman.

Discovered on the web with her first single “Raggamuffin’”, her music videos have attracted more than one million views as of today.

However, nothing was predisposing this multi-talented artist to a musical career. It’s only when she became a teenager that she discovered music. Until then, her only connection with it was through her ballet lessons. “It’s when these lessons became boring that I felt the urge to do something else” she explains. “And then music became my real passion”. Almost overnight, you could have heard her add…

The reggae-ragga sound textures that are part of her daily life are soon going to influence her ; first of all the Erykah Badu nu soul sound, later on MeShell Ndegeocello, but before all Lauryn Hill’s Fugees, her only icon: “It’s true that she is a kind of role model to me. She raps like a gangsta girl, the way she sings is truly divine…I have learnt every single chord of her album.” Some chords played on a guitar, which Selah Sue is going to adopt at the same time as her musical discoveries. “To my mind, one couldn’t go without the other”. As if it had become essential to her to breathe her personality into this “new world”. “I started to learn the guitar, and very quickly I came to spend five to six hours on it every single day. As soon as I was leaving my lesson I would lock myself up in my room just to play”.

Warm, powerful, deep, slightly hoarse, deceptively vulnerable just a second afterwards… the voice of Selah Sue is truly unique. Selah Sue has been refining her art through the stage for two years, being the supporting act for artists such as The Do, Jamie Lidell, Keziah Jones, Sébastien Tellier… or playing at some festivals this year such as the Art Rock Festival in Saint-Brieuc ou the Eurockéennes Festival in Belfort.

Until her first album scheduled for February 2011, an exclusive five-tracks EP has been released digitally on October 25th (French physical release: November 2nd), including the hit single “Raggamuffin’”.
