Semko Fontaine Taylor is an eclectic roots/folk trio featuring spine - tingling 3-part harmonies with 3 distinct personalities relating emotional, humorous and ethereal tales of love, life, and the unexpected - great songs, combined with the honesty and bird's-eye views of 3 true prairie souls

Biography

Saskatchewan's new trio Semko Fontaine Taylor release their first full-length album "Heartaches and Numbers" (Busted Flat Records/Universal) on November 16th, 2010.

Semko Fontaine Taylor (SFT) is a new trio from Saskatchewan consisting of core members-veteran singer/songwriters Jay Semko, Kim Fontaine and David j Taylor, alongside live touring drummer Charles Dumont (Emm Gryner, Brad Johner, Cody Prevost).

The group, who are longtime musical friends, made it official at the annual University of Saskatchewan Emma Lake Songwriting Retreat, where they are also songwriting instructors/mentors. Saskatoon-based singer/songwriter Lyn McGinnis threw down a challenge when she said, "You 3 Amigos should really make an album together". SFT took up the challenge; each bringing 3 songs to the table. Heartaches & Numbers is the byproduct of that recording project.

The album was recorded old school, mostly live-off-the-floor using 2 microphones placed in Jay's open concept living room in Saskatoon. Canadian recording legend Peter j Moore (producer of Cowboy Junkies "The Trinity Sessions") mastered the album in Toronto. SFT have played across the prairies and look forward to their upcoming tours/music conference/festival appearances for 2011 in support of their new album release.

Who are these people anyway?

Jay Semko is one of Canada’s most significant songwriters. As a founding member and vocalist/bassist of The Northern Pikes, Jay and the band scored numerous top-10 radio hits and sold over 750,000 units of their 7 studio albums, recording with such legends as Garth Hudson and John Sebastian, and touring with David Bowie, Robert Palmer, Peter Frampton and many others. A number of Jay's hit songs are now, and forever shall be, a part of Canada's musical landscape (Things I do for Money, Girl with a Problem, Teenland). As a solo artist, Jay has released six critically acclaimed studio albums (his most recent in 2010), and as a twice Gemini-nominated film/TV composer (Due South), Jay has had his music featured in countless TV programs and films. Jay currently resides in Saskatoon - Saskatchewan's "Bridge City".

Kim Fontaine is a Canadian songwriter and multi-instrumentalist who began touring Canada in the early '80s as a bassist. In the early 2000s Kim, who kept herself busy as a sideman throughout the 90s, got the itch to finally step up to the microphone and record her debut solo album. She enlisted Shaun Verrault (Wide Mouth Mason) and David j Taylor to co-produce her first album, the critically acclaimed Morning Pages. Kim released her 2nd album Life Happens in 2006 and her 3rd album Blue Sky Girl (co-produced by Semko and Taylor) in 2010. Kim has also developed songwriting programs for the University of Saskatchewan.

David j Taylor is an award winning (WCMA Producer of the Year Winner ‘07) Record Producer (Geoff Berner, Despistado), Re-Recording Mixer/Engineer/Sound Designer (Corner Gas and 2010 Gemini Award Nominee for The Saskatchewan River Delta), Music Supervisor (renegadepress.com) and a Singer-Songwriter (15 album releases from 92-10) who lives off the beaten path on a 20 acre farm at Milestone, SK. David cut his teeth in the music business in Vancouver BC, working for Greenhouse Studios (K.D. Lang, Nickelback) in the 90s. He fronted the Vancouver band Big Cookie, (releasing 4 albums, 3 music videos from 94-00). In 2000 he and his partner moved to Regina where David began working in audio post for TV and film. In the 2000s, David released albums with the groups Dollar Store Mary and Generals and Majors. During that time, he also released 7 solo albums. David writes a lot of songs and currently works as an in-house producer/engineer for Twisted Pair Productions in Regina, Saskatchewan's "Queen City".

SFT are the "Crosby, Stills and Nash" of the new Millennium

My Country Home

Written By: Jay Semko

makin’ a run up from North Dakota - eatin’ chips - drinking cream soda
like a dog with a good fresh bone - headin’ back to my country home
and all the trucks in the two lane river - are on a mission - they’re just givin’ er
no matter how far I should roam - never far from my country home

amazing grace is my favorite song - open up the throttle it won’t be long
my head and my arms are both feeling strong tonight
get the fire roasting and the guitars tuned - no reason to waste a fine full moon
nothin’ feels better than to be home soon - to my country home

all the wheat fields passing by are bringing teardrops to my eye
I wouldn’t trade it for the Pope in Rome - sliding back to my country home

I’ve been away for way too long - livin’ in the city is just plain wrong
a coffee for the road and make it strong tonight
get the fire roasting and the guitars singin’ - we’ll sing so loud our ears will be ringing - you won’t believe the love I’m bringing you - to my country home

the winter’s cold and the summer steams - we’re jumping in the water clear and clean - Tommy Douglas and the Rolling Stones are riding with me to my country home...my country home...my country home...

L.A.

Written By: David j Taylor

I’m glad I had a chance to see L.A.
first from the airplane - then standing in the pouring rain
you know I’ve never seen this kind of place - you watch out for cars while you step on stars

when I walked Hollywood - I wish I’d done it with you beside me - cause someday there’ll be nothin’ - nothin’ there at all - nothin’ there at all - when it falls

L.A. L.A. L.A. L.A. L.A.
You’ll fall in the ocean someday

I’m so glad to see that look upon your face again
it had been a while - since I’d seen that smile
this country livin’s welcome change - it’s wonderful - so beautiful

we’ve been a here a year - it’s quite different to east Vancouver - and when the oceans start risin’ - we’ll be miles above it all - we’ll be miles above it all - when it falls

L.A. L.A. L.A. L.A. L.A.
You’ll fall in the ocean someday

I’m glad I had a chance to see L.A - that way

L.A. L.A. L.A. L.A. L.A.
You’ll fall in the ocean someday

Puzzles & Pieces

Written By: Kim Fontaine

giving you all of my pieces tonight
every little part of me is coming your way tonight
every little word - every little thought
every little part of me is caught
up in all of your company tonight

giving you all of my pieces tonight
every little part of me is coming your way tonight
every little whisper - every little breath
every little part of me is swept
up in all of your company tonight

and suddenly it seems so simple
I’ve finally figured out - we’re puzzles and pieces
and a perfect picture comes together
when every piece of me is part of you
giving you all of my pieces tonight

giving you all of my pieces tonight
every little part of me is coming your way tonight
every little finger - every little toe
every little part of me and more
in all of my kisses tonight

and suddenly it seems so simple
I’ve finally figured out - we’re puzzles and pieces
and a perfect picture comes together
when every piece of me is part of you
giving you all of my pieces tonight

la la la la la la la

all of my pieces
all of my kisses
all of your company

Never Too Late

Written By: David j Taylor, John Antoniuk, Jen Lane

she’s been up all night long - racing the morning sun
she’s been sort of come undone - show her the way

and he’s burning both ends now - running around and around and around - his feet nowhere near the ground
show him the way

it’s never too late - it’s never too late
it’s never too late

he spent years of his days alone - and she’s been a long time gone - both hoping to find someone
to show them the way

it’s never too late - it’s never too late
it’s never too late

then one fine day they both meet through a friend
they meet up again and again and again
both were so lonely
now both have one to defend

it’s never too late - it’s never too late
it’s never too late

Before You Leave Canada

Written By: Jay Semko

before you leave Canada - I have something to say
I’d like you to listen - then you can go on your way
well you never liked hockey and you never liked bacon
you always said it was way too cold - I agreed but you still kept complaining
well you can have palm trees and I’ll keep my pines
you can have money that all looks the same
I kinda like the queen’s face on mine

before you leave Canada - for the red white and blue
remember that somebody’s waiting back home in the snow for you

well I love America like I love my sister
we don’t hang out that much anymore and sometimes I miss her - but if I was in trouble she’d be there in a flash
if I needed a shoulder to lean on - a ride somewhere or even some cold hard cash

before you leave Canada - for the red white and blue
remember that somebody’s waiting back home in the snow for you
oh Canada....

you put on your make-up and you’re wearing new clothes - the taxi is waitin’ and you’re ready to go
I gave you maple leaf kisses and I kept your toes warm
and I plugged in your car every night so you wouldn’t have to go out in a freezing snow storm

before you leave Canada - for the red white and blue
remember that somebody’s waiting back home in a snowbank for you
before you leave Canada - just kiss me goodbye
I swear it’s the last time you’ll ever see a Canadian cry

before you leave Canada - just kiss me goodbye
I swear it’s the last time you’ll ever see a Canadian cry

Help

Written By: Kim Fontaine

help - I need a little help - I need a little hand
I need someone to navigate this storm
cause it won’t back down
help - I need a little help - I need a little hand
I need someone to turn this ship around
bring it back to higher ground

but if I’m alone now - all alone now
I’ll open my arms and I’ll paddle to shore
and I’ll keep on kicking - I’ll keep on fighting
every wave that is pulling me under

help - I need a little help - I need a little hand
I need someone to turn a light house on
I don’t know where to row

but if I’m alone now - all alone now
I’ll open my arms and I’ll paddle to shore
and I’ll keep on kicking - I’ll keep on fighting
every wave that is pulling me under
‘til everything fades away

Anne Marie

Written By: David j Taylor

Anne Marie started stalking when she was only 17 - her teenage boyfriend broke her heart and crushed her dreams - now 32 her sights are firmly fixed on you but you don’t know it yet - in fact you’ve never met

she cruised the chat rooms - night and day in search of you - came across your myspace page - saw your image and just knew - that you were her one true love and there’s nothing that you can do - but you don’t know it yet - you won’t soon forget that..

she loves your body - she loves your soul
she loves you so much and she’ll never let you go
she loves your jpegs and all your mp3’s
she knows all about you - you’re the star of all her dreams

until that rainy night when a knock came at your door
half-soaked, a woman stood, one you’ve never seen before and she says “hi Dan - my name is Anne - you’re mine now - close the door” and you don’t argue - cause it could be loaded

so Anne Marie starts talking - tells poor Dan about her life - and how long she’s waited just to be his lovely wife - she says “do you love me for all I’ve done to be with you” - when you don’t answer that - the shot comes in seconds flat.

she loved your body - thought she knew your soul
she loved you so much and she finally let you know
she loved your jpegs and all your mp3’s
she knew all about you - now she’s the star of all your dreams - Anne Marie

Postcard from Pincher Creek

Written By: Kim Fontaine

well someone sent me a postcard from where the Rockies and the wheatfields meet - someone sent a note from the General Store - just a few miles south of Pincher Creek - the last of the cowboy frontiers

well the wind blows hard in the valley where the rivers and the tumbleweeds meet - and I met a man - his face was like leather and his hat was hell bent out of shape
and he asked me to dance - consumed by the liquor - he said he was in love with me

well someone sent me a postcard from where the windmills and the oil wells meet - with a snapshot of a bridge - and men riding horses and it looks just like Pincher Creek - and it says I will be married soon but I am still in love with you

it was so long ago - and my memory - of everything about him - is fading away

well someone sent me a postcard from where the Rockies and the wheatfields meet - someone sent a note from the General Store - just a few miles south of Pincher Creek I put it in a box full of letters
and marked it please return to sender

Heartaches & Numbers

Written By: Jay Semko

you roam these halls everynight - where the paintings all seem to be haunted - you receive what you ask for - and you get all the things that you ever wanted

you’re thick as a sponge full of water you squeeze into jars in the kitchen with memories as full as a camera - with pictures you never will take to the store to develop and you’re sitting here deep in the dark

making up rhymes - they all sound the same and you’re just shooting pigeons - it’s a big waste of time - the rain’s coming down and you’re watching it wash you

you’re thick as a sponge full of water you squeeze into jars in the kitchen with memories as full as a camera - with pictures you never will take to the store to develop and you’re sitting here deep in the dark with world’s biggest whore on your lap and you’re dreaming of heartaches and numbers - heartaches and numbers...

tastes like snowflakes on your tongue - hardwood candy - gotta get some - remember how good skin feel - tastes so good it couldn’t be real - oooooohhhh

in a couple of days - you’ll feel so much better the drugs will wear off - but you’re straighter than straight - so there are no excuses just sit there and wait ‘cause

you’re thick as a sponge full of water you squeeze into jars in the kitchen with memories as full as a camera - with pictures you never will take to the store to develop and you’re sitting here deep in the dark with world’s biggest whore on your lap and you’re dreaming of heartaches and numbers - heartaches and numbers...

Goodbye Hazel

Written By: David j Taylor

Goodbye Hazel
(Music/Lyrics by David j Taylor SOCAN)

Goodbye Hazel
I’ll miss you Hazel
I won’t get to talk to you anymore

I know you’ll be checking in on me
I know you’ll always be there with me
You loved me like I was your own
Your presence made this place my home

So I sat down wrote you a song
You were from Liberty Saskatchewan
And I can’t believe your gone
Here's your song

Goodbye Hazel
Good old Hazel
You showed optimistic blindness
Through all your heartache I saw kindness

So I sat down wrote you a song
You were from Liberty Saskatchewan
And I can’t believe your gone
Here's your song

Goodbye Hazel
Good old Hazel
